Had a spate of breakdowns/recoveries this morning, mainly down to the effects of the cold. Was down to minus 16C last night. This started me wondering what happens to diesel at these temps - does it just freeze - ie go solid - and block injectors etc...or does it break down in some way? Anyone any ideas? :)

And to answer your next question...In long periods of cold, (hasn't been above minus 3 here for 6 weeks and often minus 15)...I put a liter of petrol in with every tank of diesel...helps stop the filters waxing up too much.

Hang on a minute, your job involves repairing motors yet you don't know that diesel gels in the cold...

I kind of do....I work for an independant garage that does AA, RAC, Britannia, Mondial, Green Flag work, but I only do the Recovery side of the job, to leave the Mechanics clear to do the roadside repairs and workshop side. This way I deal with numerous breakdowns/accidents...but don't need to know ****!
