Hi All,

Well i think ive got to the bottom of the miss-fire on the TD5 ive just brought.. Ive had had it looked at and the ecu is comming up with a hole host of problems... had a check on a few areas and there are no live out puts to sensors etc.. so my question is.. is it a good idea to try and have the one ive got repaired or buy a second hand one off ebay and have it reprogramed? also has anyone had this done and what does it involve?

Also i have just taken a second set of pictures of the car now i have started to fit the new interior and had the paint mopped so its comming along way from when i picked it up.. i will try and get them on later if anyone would like a look.

thanks guys

Before you spend any dosh,it might be a good idea to check further. You say there is no output to various sensors,do you mean the 5v supply to things like the throttle pedal,AFM and boost modulator solenoid etc ?
If it is then there is a strong chance that the engine loom has rubbed through and shorted out - usually around the front of the cyl head or on the A/C comp.
The ecu itself is fairly reliable, there is little to fear from a used one - as long as its the right spec all it will need is a security recode and to reset the injector codes.

hi Eightinavee, Ive had the loom looked at and its fine.. the problem is def the ecu.. its dumping fuel in when ever it likes and no power going to the mass airflow sensor.. as a result it sounds like its only running on 4 pots and missing on the 5th.. i brought the car with this problem (and more) and looking at the ecu its been forced open in the past.
Thanks for that Sierrafery, thats made for interesting reading.. looking at the link you hav given me, looking at that the ecu on the car is wrong... mines a manual but the ecu on the car is part number MSB101340 so its looking like thats wrong... hummm not sure where to go from here????

ive just looked and my part number is MSB101184...

Hmmmmm.........i'm digging now after a list i had once with ecu codes, i think it went away with my last computer's harddisk....... what it's on webrover page is just the generic list there are other codes too, those are the most common ones.

I found some old files of mine with various discussions, see this:

"The MSB101184 ECU was only fitted between VINs YA251680 through YA288370 then superceded by MSB101330 which ran through VIN 2A736339 (then the later flashable NNN type ECUs were released)". >>> so deffinetly MY2000

if your car is between these VIN's then it's the right/original ECU and my advice in this case u better talk with the ECU repair guys.

I know you can change a MSB for a NNN and have the security and injector codes reflashed.

You can also use an Auto NNN in a manual, but not the other way round. The NNN ones usually fetch at least £250 s/hand so probably best to get a warranted s/head MSB

Here is a list maybe it helps :

Thanks guys mines a 2000... think im going to take the ecu in on monday and see if i can fet it repaired.. failing that im going to replace it and try to get it all flashed if i can find someone local to do it...

hoping to get it all running by next weekend so i can take it out for a run... and of course get it dirty!

I had an ecu repair with ecu doctor really good service done and back in 4 days
Would use them time and time again

Allcar electronics in Alfreton,Derbyshire do an ecu hire service, you can either send it back if it doesnt help or keep it and pay more money.Helpful bunch and will do repairs on your ecu if its one they dont keep.
And no I dont work for them, infact I dont know why I'm recommending them as they keep on giving garages my number to give them advice....

AllCar electronics it is then, that sounds about the best option, I'll give them a call in the morning and see if they have got one to hire/sell me tomorrow. Of course I'll let u all no how I get on.. While I'm on, I've taken the head lining out today as its got oil on it, I've spoken to a breakers and then want 100 for a second hand one.. As anyone ever recovered there's? If so how did it go and what fabric did u use? Thanks again guys

Just thought id let you all know.. I called Allcar this morning and they couldnt help with my ecu.. the dont cover that code.. so i managed to speakto one in eastwood nottingham and they said they could help.. dropped it off this morning and they said they would call me in a couple of days.
