I have a small problem that I fear might grow into a bigger one. If I get the car to operating temperature all seems well even from cold, park up for say an hour, come to start it while engine is still warm. Starts okay then it will 'stutter'. RPM drops slightly at the same time. Because this seems temperature dependent I suspect the engine coolant temp sensor but egr has also been mentioned. Also, the possibility of drawing in air. Any ideas, suggestions, recommendations etc welcome.

If it's only when restarting from hot I would discount drawing in air. More likely a sensor like number 4 injector needle lift sensor.

Thanks datatec, checked back thro' receipts and found 'diesel fuel injector with needle sensor' replaced in March 2010 so I assume that should be okay. Noticed the problem this morning when starting from cold so obviously getting worse. However, after driving some 16 miles and leaving the car for about an hour and a half, it did not stutter or drop any revs
Personally, I dont think it is air getting into the system, I am leaning towards a temperature related problem. I was wondering if maybe the ect might have suffered damage due to overheating when the radiator blew.

Diesel bug again?

Don't think so, indeed I don't think it was diesel bug in the first place.
All cleaned out now anyway. The actual problem was residue from commercial diesel cleaned from the system by biodiesel. It is quite normal for biodiesel to remove residue during the first few hundred to 1000 miles and the reason for changing the fuel filter before completing 1000 miles on biodiesel. Been making bio for 3 years and never had any trouble. Same oil, same system, same processor, so I can't see why there would suddenly be a problem.
All this started started after I had the fuel filter changed. That was when the dead pump showed up in the fuel system. My local indy reckons they pack up for a pastime and you don't even know until the next service when you come to change filters etc.

"Been making bio for 3 years and never had any trouble. Same oil, same system, same processor". But how long have you been using it in the P38? Some injector pumps do not like it apparantly:eek:

The Bosch pump on the P38 is supposed to be a perfect match for biodiesel. Its actually supposed to improve the running of a pump with wear on it.

I'd be inclined to have a look at pump timing. The 'hot start' issue has often been mis diagnosed as a problem due to the glow plugs not coming on. The real culprit is wear in the diesel pump and stretch in the pump drive chain. The cold start fuel map has advanced timing. This is what makes the engine start more than the glow plugs coming on.

I completely cured my starting problems by getting the timing modulation back into spec. Whether it was wear in the pump or stretch in the chain I don't know but my 140,000 mile DSE is joy to start now.

Hi Spud,
Thanks for your comments. Car starts perfectly every time, the problem occurs as it is getting to operating temperature. Once it gets to operating temp runs fine. This is what makes me think it might be the temp sensor. Tick over might be a little slow at just over 800rpm. The problem seemed to have started after I changed the fuel filter.

Have you tried cleaning out or even better, blanking off the EGR.

Yes, I have considered both. My current thinking is to blank it off. Originally, I had decided to clean out the whole system, intercooler, induction manifold and egr but due to time constrains and the need to have the car available I never got around to doing any of it. Think I might blank it off tomorrow morning and give it a try. Cheers Spud.

Iv'e just finished blanking the EGR and do not know if it will make any difference, time will tell. Find out tomorrow no doubt. Certainly gives the car a lot more poke! Going out to the town tomorrow (about 16 miles) and then going to call at the local indy to see what he has to say. I will keep you posted.
Cheers all
Bill
