Thats older than my lathe, and will be a good solid lump better than these modern ones that flex, may not nave all the fancy stuff of a new one but will never wear out:)

It weighed a lot before I got to work on the frame it sits on. It now has a steel frame with 2" thick construction timber on top and then 3/4" oak floorboards perpendicular and then. Another 4" timber for pedestals and a stainless-steel tray to catch swarf and drips. There is no flex, just a slight depression in the Earth's crust underneath it.

My lathe is one of these made by E W Stringer

Does it have a Merlin engine or is it the rare model with a radial engine ?

Good morning chaps.

Hey, it's all gone a bit quiet on here, so I thought I'd better stir things up.

My suspenders continue to function well after all the help I received on this forum. From all the input I got, I understood that pumping up the system from zero should not take more than a few minutes. How about 15 seconds ? That's how long my "New" system takes to get up after a week of sitting on its loading setting.

In my enthusiasm for getting the EAS working, I slightly overdid the numbers. I put the top setting, (which I use for climbing over the local Renault Nicoles ), a little bit higher than before. It also gives a much better view over hedges and fences if we are feeling particularly nosy. THEN I discovered the downside. A couple of new problems appeared a week or two after all the work. First, I started getting an occasional vibration-type noise that sounded a bit like the EAS compressor firing up but greatly amplified. I knew it couldn't be the compressor because that was working so well and the noise was not consistent. The second strange thing (in technical parlance) was a clonk when going over a pot-hole or speed bump, just like you get when a rear shock absorber has totally failed or a silencer hanger had come adrift. Couldn't be anything like that, not after my recent Contrôle Technique (MOT) had checked everything, quite violently I might add. It took a while to cotton on to the fact that both problems appeared only when the car was on full height. So until I can get out there with the magic EASUnlock and reduce the numbers a bit, I am just avoiding the top setting. So what's my problem, you might ask ? You did ask, didn't you ? No problem at all. ; I just thought I might warn anyone who is tempted to try and put their RR ten feet in the air.

In case all my new friends here think I've bogged off (Wilmot, anyone ?) I am now trotting off to the appropriate forum for engine mismanagement. I suppose there is one... In case anybody wants to keep up with my activities here in Frogshire, just let me say, I quite like idling but at 700rpm not at 1200 rpm !

Thanks again to one and all.

Seconds are normal if the system hasn't been depressurised. The noise\vibration could be the compressor mountings or the dished washers in the wrong orientation,do a search I'm sure @Henry_b did a post a while ago.;):D

While we're talking EAS again my car's decided to do the dog cocking its leg impression again. When I turn into my drive which is a sharp left hand turn and park up the passenger side sits higher than the driver's side. No faults showing on the Storie Wilson diagnostics, strange as I was thinking height sensor. Both laptops have the downloads ,one has developed a faulty keyboard, the other I cannot open because the WinZip has time expired. I've tried to find another download that Adobe can open but without luck. All advice welcome. I have thought of trying to download the useable one to a memory stick but with the dodgy keyboard I'm not sure if it's possible. Bloody putors and EAS.:D:D

I thought of mountings and checked in case they were not tightened sufficiently or even tightened too much. I didn't consider orientation. Without going out to look, I can't remember which way up the washers are at present. I was never quite sure which way was right as long as there was metal to rubber and not metal to metal. Can you tell me which is correct ? The other thing which suggested that that wasn't the problem was that after spotting my mistake on my top height setting and avoiding that, pro tem, the vibration-type noise seems to have stopped. Coincidence or was the noise coming from somewhere away from the compressor.?

Sorry, I've just registered the link you gave me about mountings so I'll have a look at that later.

Many thanks.

Let me know if you are still struggling with the diagnostics. I think I can probably send you a copy of Mr Storey's wizardy. Also tell me if you still need an unzip program. I think I can send you either WinZip or something similar. I doubt if we can do it on here, so if I can help, PM me and we can exchange email addresses so that I can send them direct. Can't do it much before tomorrow or Saturday.

If you have been up higher has it aggravated wear on a prop UJ?:).

The compressor sits on concave washers atleast it should. The bottom ones need to go with the concave side downwards and the top ones with the concave side upwards.
Good afternoon Henry.
Thank you for taking the trouble to wade in on this. As others have said, you have made it very clear. You have even told me that I should have 6 dished washers. I have only ever had 3, plus 3 plain washers. Wonder when that happened. Now I must go looking for three more. May not have been the cause of the problem, but it is certainly something to attend to if only to rule it out. As I said I was only ever concerned to avoid metal to metal.
Thanks again.

7zip is free and will open most zip files.

Some people also put some rubber or cork washers under the EAS box where it mounts. As Henry says it is sandwiched between dished washers.

Afternoon J.

Is that "aggravated", as in "knackered" ? Sounds as if you have "previous" in this department. I don't think I have done much more than 1 km on full height and obviously only at low speed or the height would have kicked down. Suppose you wouldn't care to "quantify" serious ? now i'm in danger of running out of " " " 's.

Tony
