The dutch piston seal does seem to fail more often than it should. However their cylinders seem to be very good. I would not change the seal without changing the cylinder. You can get OEM seals from Island 4x4 about £27.00 so not cheap or a pattern one from eBay for less. But get a cylinder also.

Rover Renovations in the USA do overhaul kits that include an improved cylinder. No personal experience but seen some good reports.

Yes the stainless cylinder is supposed to be very good if not a little pricey. They also do genuine seals. Then there's the postage which seems a bit much these days. But maybe worth a try.

I buy the seals from P38 spares.com - usually ten at a time, they are no problem,if the cylinder is not damaged it gets a clean up and is reused. The seals come from Rover Renovations in the states, his valve block kits do too - again no problem.

Is there any form of lube that can be sprayed into the compressor inlet on a regular basis to help lube it internally or are there any service tips for the compressor to maintain it before it fails apart from keeping the filters clean etc?

No lub at all, it is designed to run dry.
