Dyslexia……

Very frustrated as I have just purchased new discs, pads, callipers and calliper holders for my 1.8 2000 freelander….

being dyslexic I mistakenly read the part identification wrong and got the parts for the td4 rather than the petrol 1.8

needless to say I can’t return the parts

I am gutted as cash is really tight at the moment and now need to order the right parts

any recommendations as to the best place to buy reasonably priced parts for a 1.8 petrol and any other pit falls I should avoid …….. thanks

I trawl ebay looking for reduced price parts, I've D1's and a Ninety so have no ideas on Fl parts or prices (& even their crossreferences to other vehicles)

Early FL1 seem to be solid front discs, and are half the price of the vented version. Eurocarparts currently have them online for £8.52 each

I was wondering that. The brakes changed in 2000 - uo to 2000 was WABCO ABS, solid discs, smaller assist drum thingie - 2000 on was Teves ABS, vented discs and larger assist drum thingie - excuse descriptive license.

But, I'm thinking those changes applied to all vehicles regardless of engine, so TD4 brake parts will fit a 1.8 - so long as its the same model year.

@CPD1973 do you know what model year (VIN) your car is? Is it an early (yellow indicator) car or the later (clear indicator) car? (baring in mind they might be swapped!)

I suppose the way to check is to see if you have vented brakes currently - if they are then I think they are the same as the TD4 parts you have purchased.

I may be corrected on this.

It has solid front discs, I managed to get the discs correct……. just the bloody callipers, they fit on but it’s obviously wrong as when you put the wheel on the calliper catches the wheel

So frustrated with myself

I can’t seem to find a supplier who sells the callipers and calliper holders, I will look at reconditioning the holders as they are potentially salvageable…. This would save some cash. I will continue to look.

John craddock seem to stock them but how do I know what part to get, the vehicle is my island car (no pubic roads) and it’s been years since I have seen the log book…….

I'm also dyslexic, so know the issue with word and number confusion.
However if your 1.8 is after 2001, then they'll fit just fine, as all FL1s after the 2001 MY update use the same brakes.

Solid rotor calipers are slightly different in dimensions to the vented ones. It's possible to upgrade the vented simply by getting vented rotors, and fitting 5mm spacers behind the front wheels.

This is very helpful indeed, so I all I have to do is fit the correct brake pads (as I got the correct ones for the old callipers….) and fit 5mm spacers behind the wheels to stop them hitting the calliper and all will be good ? I have solid (new) discs on the front not vented but I am assuming there is enough movement in the calliper piston to take this up ? This is really positive

You have to use the vented rotors, as the vented caliper is too wide for the solid rotors. I'm going on the theory that vented rotors are cheaper than solid calipers.
It will work for a while but the piston will pop out the caliper before the pads are worn out.

Did you order them online? If so you have 14 days to change your mind and return them.

Yes online but I have already opened the boxes and tried to fit one side also the company has a very strict no return policy.

yes your correct so I will buy a set of vented rotors (discs) and the correct pads for the td4 callipers and some spacers and let you know how I get on. Thanks

Just a thought. Did you get new calipers brackets? As the solid rotor caliper bracket isn't wide enough for the vented rotors.
You can buy 5mm wheel spacers from Halfords IIRC.

Distance Seller Regulations trump any company's return policy; The Law > "company policy". But as Nodge says, they are a bolt on upgrade, so steal yourself a silver lining to this cloud of frustration and stop giving yourself such a hard dime for goofing the order - you didn't mess up, you accidentally upgraded

I couldn't care less what their policy is. By law you have 14 days to return and you don't have to give a reason why.

You must tell the customer they can cancel their order up to 14 days after their order is delivered. They do not need to give a reason for cancelling.


If you do not tell the customer about their right to cancel, they can cancel at any time in the next 12 months. If you tell them about the right to cancel during these 12 months, they have 14 days to cancel from when you told them.

Yes I purchased the calliper brackets as well so that’s sorted, I will double check what I have and have not got.. I am unaware of what the spacers look like …. I had imagined them as large washers but will investigate.
