Slob - are you running Win2k or WinXp ? Sounds like your OS is caching way too much stuff, the 'machine gun mode' moozik is typical of stuff being written out of RAM to the pagefile on the disk - while you get the 'few seconds pause' does the HDD light flash like a perv in an all girls dormitory or even stay on continuously?

ave got xp and ah can hear me hard drive whirl up. wots caching mean? and how do i stop it

Caching = taking stuff out of RAM, usually because it's not being used by an active application or because you're running too much stuff or because you're low on RAM for any other reason, and 'caching' it into a big file on the hard disk. It's also called 'paging' - as the big file is called the 'pagefile'.

You don't want to stop it, if you could stop it your machine would run seriously slowly and would be very inflexible about what applications it would run concurrently.

What you want to do is find out why your OS thinks you're that low on RAM.

Download a program called 'HiJackThis' and next time you get the problem, run it and save the log file it generates (this will be a large chuck of text) and e-mail it to me - I'll see what I can find out for you. HJT will usually show up stuff like spyware/adware/virus activity etc and occasionally memory holes in 3rd party apps - but it's not really a tool to use unless you know what you're looking for ;)

Failing that - git yer arse on MSN and I'll talk you through a cupple'o quick fixes.

Pagefile are ok if you don't have much memory and a lot of disk space.
But if you have around 1.5Gb or more memory and XP / 2k then you are better off switching it off.
The other thing that will slow a machine down is if your HDD is more that 80%full, That always seems to cause performance problems.

I had a similar problem a while back, in the end i was advised to download a program called registry mechanic, cost £20 but well worth, it found 4000+ problems in my registry and my computer is like a new machine. I have had no problems since.

I've got a few nifty bits of s/w that analyse problems with hardware - memory, hard drives, that kinda thang (it's wot I do to earm me bread) I'll cheerfully email the bit's and bobs but you have to be able to burn a bootable disk (or have a '98 bootdisk)

is thur an easy way to tell if yer computor memory is dying?
mine keeps freezing fer a few seconds, every 5mins, after 30mins use. dunt seem to be any progs running that would cause it , well none that i can see
oi dozy bollox its unlikley t be ram, if it were a duff memory block then y'd crash wen data hit that block. most likely spyware or virus seein as y spend most of y life trawline ****e on web,:D
download spyboy 1.4 dont panick its free an run a clean an immunise,
then stop downloadin **** offy outube y tit.

an also, if y have the propensity to download dodgy software of them there torrent sites, y'll have about half the population of indochina leachin stuff off y pc.
Any torrent downloads y have MOVE them from the download area on y pc and delete the folder to stop any chinkies leachin off y. :)
