Hi, has anyone had any experience romoving the front cover of the BMW 2.5 diesel? I am being told that you need to take the head off, and the sump to get this off. Seems excesive all I want to do is check the tensioner.....

Hi,

According to Land Rover TIS
You remove the sump, then the air con compressor, and then the Power steering pump.

Prize the cover from the gasket leaving the Gasket behind, and then cut the gasket where it dissapears behind the oil pump housing - 8 places -
Do Not disturb the Oil Pump housing.

Hope this helps

:)

do you mean the tensioner for the serpentine belt?

We are talking timing chain here. There is a death rattle comming from the front of the engine that dissapears with a bit of rev, so I am thinking the chain tensioner has failled or lost its spring. Realy dont want to take the head off just ot fix a relativly small item. I am right in thinking, head off = upsetting the fuel pump timing??. Main dealer says it a big job, two specialists wont touch it.... There must be a work around

hi rewmer,
if you remove the oil filler cap you will be able to see the timing chain, you can reach it with your fingers and check if it is loose (the chain will be easy to move up and down on the gear) if it does require a strip down I would invest in a workshop manual and read up on what is required before you tackle it I believe you can get a CD rom off ebay for about a fiver you can then print off the relevant pages and if you cover them in oil you can print off some more!!

Cheers for the tip, I will have a look. I have the Rave CD, but the detail is poor on the BMW engine. There doesnt appear to be a section on tensioner checking/re-newel
