I presume the torque reduction during gear change is by a certain amount and not to a certain amount. In theory then would it be possible to reprogram so the torque reduction is reduced to the original safe value to preserve the gearbox life or would this result in loss of smooth changes.

Sorry, wasnt aiming to repeat everything ive read.
I just have seen that there are a hell of alot of knowledgable people on here so thought i would investigate my thoughts.

You cannot increase the bottom end torque by increasing boost pressure, because below 2000 rpm the exhaust gas volume is too low to spin the turbo up enough. The only way to get more low end torque is by increasing fueling. It is totally pointless fitting a boost pressure controller to try to increase low end performance it just cannot do that. The waste gate will only ever open at high RPMs when the turbo is spun up it will NEVER open below 2000 RPM. So increasing the boost pressure can only give an advantage at higher engine RPMs. So basically a waste of effort.

The torque reduction is effectively a fixed amount, so it would be possible to re-map it if you new how. Reducing it too much would have a negative effect by producing torque reversals.
BMW achieved something remarkable with the M51. Most diesels have shed loads of torque from near tickover and it drops off pretty smartly above 4500rpm or so. The M51 unusually has bugger all torque/power below 2000rpm, it does go on to higher revs though.
To change it would probably need a new cam with different timing and lift as well as adjusting the fueling.:D

thanks Data,learnt something yet again:)

Fitting a boost gauge to the car in the near future to monitor what its doing, using a 0 - 1.5 bar gauge.

Issue i have is running into comflicting information as to the best place to fit it for accuracy.

Some recommend inline with the "wastegate", alternatively "t"'d into the hose going to the MAP sensor.

im now confused as both argue well, although the inlet manifold pressure taken from the MAP sensor hose would surely give a more accurate reading of boost into the engine?

Confused confused confused...

thanks

Don't matter where you tap it from it will all be the same pressure.

Bit late, but a pic of the standard beast before i start playing with it

rangerover.jpg

I plan on cleaning up the exterior furher, but it will be kept completely visibley standard. I like the looks an thats why i got it.

Im only planning on playing under the bonnet and some bits here and there in the cabin, albeit trying to do everything as factory as possuible.

Glad you like it though

i have played with getting a bit more poke from a dse!
first step get the cat removed chopped out straight pipe in its place will not fail mot.
egr blanking or removal.
performance air filter.
fit boost guage either place but i had mine teed in at the manifold so i could then fit a gates valve down by the wastegate to manual adjust also stops waste gate creep.
fit silicone intercoooler hoses. i only had the boost up 2psi over standard.
these mods will help the turbo spool up much quicker and make it feel a lot quicker than standard.
next chip or remap, custom remap is better to get most out of mods but if on a budget there is a company on ebay called ves sport selling a chip for the dse only cost £120!
i have one fitted for a while now very impressed!
if you want to run any higher boost you will need uprated intercooler island4x4 are the cheapest. but you will need to see iat temperatures before you go mad else you will crack the head!
as many will tell you gearbox may not last to long but my currant dse is chipped and my previous i went a lot further with, as far as iam concerened new box £750 i can deal with that when the time comes still cheaper than a clutch and dual mass flywheel on a manual! and the increase in driving plesure is worth it!
end of the day its your rangie and if you want to play with it then go for it! i dont like l322 converted p38 rangies but iam not going to give people a hard time if they want to do it each to there own!

Performance air filter and EGR blanking will make bugger all difference.

All this reminds me of the days long ago when enthusiastic lads bought long bell shaped so called "RAM AIR" inlets to fit to their 125cc BSA Bantams. Some of the claimed performance improvements had to heard to be believed. Any how let the kiddies play.:D:D:D

Are you having a laugh? Only thing that will make the turbo spool up quicker is the chip giving more fuel at lower RPM.

actually no iam not. by fitting the valve by the wastegate it does spool up quicker by eliminating waste gate creep which iam sure i dont need to explain to you.
and egr blanking with air filter, de cat, boost increase etc does make a difference not on there own granted but combined they do.
simply they compliment each other.
done it seen the results rolling road proved not on a dse but with an L series rover diesel engine ( or perkins diesel if you want to go far enough back )
same principles apply.
also every diesel i have owned with egr has been blanked or removed and i think they have allways run smoother.
but even if you doubt that it is a good idea for engine life

The turbo will not spool up quicker by increasing the max boost pressure, the only thing that can do that is more fuel being injected at lower RPM giving more exhaust gas pressure. Waste gate creep will not occur at low RPM and low boost pressure it simply cannot happen. Increasing max boost pressure will prevent the waste gate from hovering at higher boost making things a little more linear. But in general non of the things you have done other than the addition of a chip to give more fuel low down which would spool the turbo slightly sooner because of the increased exhaust gas flow. Will have any effect on low down torque.
