I've ordered 2 cylinders for the rear drum brakes on my '99 Freelander. There's only 1 part number so presumed the same one is OK for both sides.

I fitted the passenger side one yesterday no problems.

Come to do the drivers side and when its offered up with the brake pipe lining up with the hole that had the plastic bung in, the mounting screw threads are at the top - but need to be at the bottom. I scratched my head, but concluded that I could swap the bleed nipple into that hole and screw the pipe into the hole vacated by the nipple, then the screws would be at the bottom.

Is this OK? Are the holes/ports on the cylinder interchangeable between brake pipe and cylinder?

As you've done. Move the bleed nipple to the other hole and fit the pipe where the nipple came out. The mounting holes will then be at the bottom.;)

As long as the bleed nipple’s at the top you’re golden ;)

Don’t forget to splash a bit of copper grease about, especially on the bleed nipple. And when you’re done, top up the master, open the nipple, and leave it to start dripping (a few minutes) - I find you hardly have to bleed them at all after doing this.
