droplinks not the prob?

If they've only been on there for a few weeks they'll be OK for now.

Without going back over your thread I can't remember what you have and have not already changed in addition to the drop links, track rod ends, ARBs, but this is what I'd be looking at now: wishbone bushes, a broken coil spring, strut top mounts.

That is IF you are convinced it's a suspension noise and not, say, your exhaust bashing into something when turning.

Now you've changed the arb bushes do the drop links move and if so do they have the same degree of movement as before.
If so they must be buggered then changed for Genuine kit, that's what i'd do.

first of all i did the drop links about 6 weeks ago, no change, then i did the track rod end ball joints 2 days ago, no change, then today i did ARB bushes, after doing the bushes the roll bar was much tighter more central and didnt move in the slightest (thats just using arms strength, but going round roundabouts thats alot of weight leaning on that corner and the droplink is only 1 inch maximum away from the strut on both sides) so i was thinking the droplinks i did a few weeks ago maybe crappy ones, and was thinking of getting genuine ones.
NOTE: knocking on n/s only round roundabout and pot hole roads.

Its a tough one to answer. My drop links are about an 1" from the strut also.
My mate, who has a garage, said he once changed some drop links that the owner supplied (cheapies) the guy hadn't gone 100yds and they both snapped.

Its your call, obviously, but I know what i'd do.

Good luck and keep us posted.
Mick

they get loose in ball joint and knock .pull and lever to see if they have any play in joints as if you where trying to pull joint off any play there knackered and thee are alot of rubbish ones out there

I have an idea for a diagnostic, do you think if i somehow wrapped a rubber bush around the rollbar where its most likely to touch the strut and then see if the knocking sound is softned and that could pin point if it is the drop links

Try this it'll tell you straight away if they're loose.

Just an idea but are the engine mounts, the steering rack, the shock mountings on the wings, the sub-frame and the sump guard all secure and tight?

I, too, have tried everything, wishbones, all the bushes, all the ball joints, pulled, tugged, levered everything imaginable, measured clearances, checked replacement parts against old etc.
Now, in desperation, drove down a local bumpy track at 15 mph with my head out of the window to try and pinpoint the noise, all windows, sunroof, tailgate glass open and I still cannot pinpoint it!
Noise happens less or s non-existant when:
1) car has full to 3/4 tank.
2) with a front seat passenger
3) on a hot day
4) on a very wet day.
Been a year now, just passed mot, so nothing motable at fault???
Going to live with it, but not happy!

Just a thought, without wanting to open a can of worms, I have just changed the track rod ends on my 1.8 XEI and have been looking at tracking.
Whilst researching four wheel tracking I have read about all the side effects of out of line wheels.
Have a look into this and see if any of the symptoms apply to your Hippo.

well the next thing im trying is fitting rubber bushes around my roll bar at the nearest point to where it would hit the strut. if this cushions the knocking then i can pin point too the droplinks hopefully.

Right. Im gonna get a new pair of droplinks next week exept i dont kno where i should get them from. The last ones I got were eBay 12 pound I won't be getting them. The 17 pound ones are britpart but i heard they are rubbish. Where's the best place to go for em

Hi jdunkers, that's good too know, I would like to look into the wishbone, exept according to haynes manuel its a pig of a job, including using a press thing to get it off. Did u do yours yourself?

Got the same problem, started about 4,000 miles ago, isn't getting any worse though, have changed ARB bushes & drop links & levered suspension bushes, reading this thread it looks like it isn't going to be easy to locate & fix. Sounds like it is coming fron the near side & I can feel it in my feet.

mine was knocking when i went and viewed the car the day before i bought it, and later that day it went through MOT and passed so they didnt even pick it up.
The only things i can think of doing is the wishbone, suspension shock or engine mounts.

can only do one at a time untill its fixed.
