Droning noise at speed

you can remove diff carrier without spreaders ,should just lever out using 2 levers if set correctly ,it has 5 thou preload on bearings again caps need marking and if the carrier bearings are replaced with timken and shims left as is on both sides should just push back in without any adjustment /setting pinion bearings should show noise on over run not power to start with

Ok... Thanks James, the noise is constant with and without power, clutch in or out. It defo sounds central rear.
I think I'll do UJs then pull the diff if the UJs don't cure it.

Still haven't got to the bottom of this one. I've fitted 4 new wheel bearings. 4 new UJs and done both front swivel preloads. I can't pinpoint this noise.
The only thing I have changed since the noise appeared is having my Michelin xzl tyres removed from the skinny rims that were on my series and fitting them onto the wider 110 rims. Could it be tyre noise? is resonating and loud. Only 50mph +
I've tried different tyre pressures. No change

tyre noise is fairly obvious id have thought ,are you saying noise appeared after tyre change

No balance weights on these rims at all. But the series rims didn't have them either. Maybe I'm over looking the obvious :scratching_chin: but it doesn't feel like wheel balance. No feedback through the steering wheel at all. I did stick a pair of road tyres on the rear and went for a drive, noise was still there. It was getting a bit dark at this point so I didn't try them on the front.
I thought I found the prob when I did one of the front UJs, it was pretty shot.
Might stick it up on axle stands and run it in gear, bent prop?

You wouldn't necessarily feel it through the steering if it was on the back but guessing testing with road tyres rules that out.

Props sometimes lose there balance weights or if it's been apart at the slider and put back in a different position it;s a possibility

any chance of swopping a known good prop and doing a road test -

same with tyres / rims ...

it might narrow it down to internals of g/box or diffs and not props or shafts...

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I finally got to the bottom of this. I replaced my front diff yesterday and the noise was still there. I've driven this thing up and down the road trying to find this noise. I took my dad out with me so I could sit in the front and back trying to track it down and my dad says to me. I had a noise like that once. It was the roof rack. I've got a full length expedition rack on, we opened the windows and held onto the rack and there it was resonating like a good-un.
I can't believe how much noise that thing made. Definatley sounded like a drive line issue.
It seems to be the air flow coming up off the roof and making one of the bars vibrate. Oh well. I've got a completley rebuilt front end now.
