Hi All,

What are your thoughts on this. I've got a noise that sounds like a wheel bearing which starts at 50mph.
It's a strange droning/ light vibration. It's there wether the clutch is in or out.
I spent today replacing all four wheel bearings and the noise is still there. It's hard to pinpoint which direction it's coming from but it sounds like centre rear.
Can the diff make this sort of noise? I recently replaced all fluids with ep90.
Or is it more likely UJs?

I need to get under there again tomorrow, just feeling a bit deflated spending 3/4 of my day doing all the wheel bearings. I ended up doing them all because some monkey had done both nuts up tight. Not backed the first nut off at all, so I thought that must be it.

i had a strange droning noise even if i drove faster to try and kill noise it got louder, so i tried the usual fault finding after a few weeks i found the problem. Still ther then one weekend wife had to work i went out on own no noise, so moral of story leave wife behind before you rip things apart

Yeah I did wonder about tyre noise. I have michelin XZL's which are inflated a bit more than normal so I might let them down a bit and go out and try again tomorrow.
It wasn't there when I went on a long run a little while ago.
It's quite an unpleasant resonance/ droning/ vibration in the cab.
I'll have a look at UJ's
I might also check the rear diff fill plug as when I pulled it out to do my fluid change I noticed it had been done up far enough to touch the diff cage. I doubt it's that though. It definitely sounds mechanical

I'm trying to prep things up for a drive to cornwall soon.

Hit the ramps by Woodchester a little hard last week and me overdrive suddenly stopped screaming......

It's still quieter than it has been for years......I'm deeply suspicious :suspicious:

Road works still going on there ?

Dont have an over drive, although i have considered replacing the standard gearbox for one with 6 gears,

That said, I'am looking for a series vehicle thats more or less ruined that I can take on some green lanes before its tax and MOT run out, I like my paint to much lol

Sorry was typing that reply waiting for the wife in the clothing store. Couldn't go into much detail.
Well I've replaced all four wheel bearings. I had a look at the props and UJs today and gave them a good lever about. I couldn't see any movement anywhere. Although this car was standing for 5 years before I got it all I did was grease them a good few times in the first few days.
The noise comes on between 50-60mph and it's like when you have a loose wheel bearing that sort of vibrating drone. It sounds very central and to the rear.
I've tried changing wheels front to back.
The only thing I was a little worried about is that my rear diff fill plug has contacted the diff cage at some point and taken a bit out. I've changed the oil since but I'm wondering if a floaty bit of metal has found its way into a bearing. Although having said that everythings smooth and quiet up to 50

rears not to bad to remove and check ,mark caps on diff carrier before you remove one ,its usually worth running the truck with rear prop off in diff lock to confirm it is rear axle

I'll give that a try James.
Mines a Salisbury though. I don't mind having a go at the diff if it is that. I'll need to make myself one of those case spreaders first though.
I might try changing the two UJs anyway as they're pretty inexpensive.
Is diff lock ok at 50mph?
