If the water is say 18 inches deep, what sort of speed do you need to do to create a bow wave? Just chatting the other day with a few mates and none of us really knew.

might be enough as 20" is more than recommended
IMO it's relative ... you'll have to accelerate untill you see the wave then keep it so...
