heating stopped working the other day at first took awhile to heat up next trip no heat, fan is working fine thermostat was changed a few months ago worked ok since want to try and drain cooling system to see if there is an airlock but not sure if i need to drain just from radiator

No need to drain.. run your cold engine with the rad filler plug removed u will soon see any traped air bubbling up, have your heater turned to hot also. Your thermostat may have packed up and is remaining open so that may be your second area to look at.
