..........if you have seen Aircraft Maintenance Manuals (I know you have Tony...!!) they are written so a total lemon can follow them - esp. the Boeing AMM's but then again they are written for Americans:D.

The EADS/Airbus manuals are a bit more technical and with better imagery, but still written for a doughnut to follow..!!:D

I have always thought that clarity and structure of writing demonstrates clarity and structure of thought.

It's hard to do, but if you have done it right the finished product looks soooo simple!

Sadly, clear and logical thought and the ability to express it seems to be a rare commodity these days (this isn't a dig at any contributors to this thread, just a general observation :rolleyes:).

Me English education and my knowledge are two differnt things , one I'm terrible at.it Doesn't make me any less wiser. Datatek you have never had rear shoes Stick to drums then or stiff cables that once freed don't bind or get hot for the rest of the Journey Until left for a period then ...,

well you was wrong ,it just indicates a talent in writing ,or excessive effort in trying to the detriment of any problem they were tackling:D
 
It's not about tackling a problem - it's about how to convey to others how to tackle a problem. Two entirely different things.

It depends on the understanding of the other person. If you wrote everything on here in minute detail you would be at it for hours. I find it easiest to offer points that can be followed by someone who is half competent and expand those points if required. Sometimes it is best to refer them to the manual to read and digest. It also depends on the quality of the information supplied by the questioner. "My car is making a noise from somewhere in the engine bay" is hardly a good start point.:):)
 
James, Wammers - I agree with both of you.

I think that my original comments have perhaps been taken the wrong way, or out of context. All I was trying to say is that there is a skill to technical communication.

If done well it conveys the right message to the intended audience in a form that they can understand. To achieve this the writer needs to understand his subject matter and his audience.

Wammers I think this is the point you have made - and you communicate very well in your much-appreciated contributions to this Forum; clearly and concisely. No-one expects you to write the full manual each time, and you are entirely right that your role is to give pointers

James we are in agreement!

I think we are in danger of endlessly debating semantics, some of which are unintended. No criticism of any contributor was intended in my original post, and I was just applauding good communication and clarity of thought generally.

Let's get back to helping the poor buggers with problems! :):)
