hey guys,
I'm planing to fit a new engine for my defender 90.there are lots of discovery 300tdi engines and gearbox out there.
1.what is the difference between defender 300tdi engine,gearbox & discovery 300tdi engine,gearbox?
2.how can we identify defender engine or discovery engine
3.can we find the engine manufacturer year from engine number?

Ayubowan Hashanadhikari,

Welcome to the forum. I will answer you're questions as best I can, but there are lots of people here with more detailed knowledge.
Putting a Discovery engine in a Defender is very common and quite straight forward.
1. There is no real difference I can think of except the air filter and pipework.
2. From the engine serial number - There is a really good website that explains the make up of different serial numbers, but I can't find the link.
3. Yes. see point 2.

Gearboxes I think are the same externally and the low range gearing - the high range gearing is slightly different, so the Discovery is a bit faster on road.

The transfer box had the different gearing mentioned above, the main gearbox is the same, however the top selectors are different between defender and discovery due to the different position of the gear leaver in the vehicle. They can however be swapped over between boxes so it is easy enough to convert a discover gearbox to fit a defender .

selector shafts are different lengths so you need an adapter like ashcrofts sell

do you guys know any tips for check the condition of 300tdi engine?
can you see it running , how quick it starts ,should start straight away ,shouldnt breathe heavy from oil filler cap when removed, condition of coolant if its just water or rusty coloured then why , but any 300 wants a new cam belt and crank bearings checking and replaced if necessary

I will check on those.
actually currently I have a 19j engine it has a heating problem that's why I'm planning to change the engine.

id fit the gear box and bring it and engine forward as a standard 300 would be if you get a donor disco you can use the rad plus frame with a few little mods ,front prop , exhaust down pipe all coolant hose fuel filter assembly etc
