After a recent brake failure, which left me with fluid peeing from the front offside caliper, I decided that given the state of them, I would splash out £100 on e-bay for two shiny new metric ones. They are indeed lovely, and I am sure they will never again look like they do now...

I've researched a bit about these calipers and the brake pipe fitting, but I'm a bit confused (sorry...), so appreciate if anyone can help me out.

The vehicle is an 1988 3.5 EFI with original factory calipers that have plenty of off-road miles (hence the state of them!). I haven't checked, but as they're original, I am sure they are not metric.

The pipes are in good nick, as the previous owner replaced them, and there's a nice pair of metal braided hoses going into the caliper. The new calipers have of course come with blanked connectors holes.

Does anyone know if I can get away with a new set of flexibles into the caliper, or will I likely need to redo the pipes as well?

I understand the originals and the metric are close enough that you can mistake them for the same, so I'd rather play safe and replace the connectors.

Or do I just need to rip everything off and come back with more info?

Sorry for being a donut, and thanks for any tips.

Jock

changed from imperial to metric in 81..so yours SHOULD be metric..

the flamge nuts should av a little m stamped in um..but dont count on that..actually really dont count on that..

if changing calipers i would be changing flexies unless in good nick (and stainless)

Thanks Zen, they do look in good nick, and they are stainless. Had the bus about 18 months and was going for second MOT. Dunno why he didn't do the calipers as well. I can't see where the fluid is coming from, I think one or more of the piston seals are gone. At £44 a side I think a new caliper is a no-brainer over a seal kit and elbow grease on refurbishing two properly rusted old lumps.

thats what i do...i dont bother repairing..though i fit 110 calipers as over 25% more pad area, and a direct swap (almost)
