Does the engine breather filter hose need to go back to engine?

Hi all.

Ive got a pre ECU ('95) 300tdi. Today I thought i'd take off a few hoses and give them a clean as ive been noticing a lot of turbo lag recently. Thought it would be a good place to start. The pipe running from the air box to the TB was caped in a runny, black oil. I have already blanked off the EGR (which is post intercooler anyway isnt it?), so obviously this is coming from what I believe to be the engine breather filter.

Has anyone ever taken this hose away from the air system? I would imagine you may have emission issues if you just let it come straight out but unless im going wading (which i dont do) I dont really see the issue in just running this pipe underneath the car and out the back, or maybe just straight out the bottom. I cant imagine its helping performance much, allowing what is effectively exhaust fumes, back into the air system. Maybe I am missing something?

Any thoughts would be hugely appreciated.

Just bumping this thread with a video taken at the time.

This video shows how much is coming out of what I believe to be the breather pipe and how much of a mess this is making to my intake pipes. Dread to think what mess I am going to find when I flush the intercooler and further still, the intake manifold. Something similar to long term EGR use I should think.

Anyway, same question. Does this really need to go back into the engine? Can I somehow build this into the exhaust or simply run a pipe to the rear of the vehicle? Or would changing the cyclone be enough?

Merry Christmas all.

Ah ok cheers! Well got a few bits to pick up from Rimmers so I'll grab a new cyclone. Yeh it goes through oil, but so did my 2 previous 300's so I dont have much to go on :p Its not getting any use atm as I am having cooling issues and possible head blown. Got some work to do over the next few weeks before I can give her a good run and start working on cleaning air related stuff.

head gasket may well have a big effect on pressure in engine ,once done check rad gets hot all over all pipes get hot once engine up to temp.you can see what coming from turbo by running engine with pipe from turbo to intercooler off at turbo

Thanks for the advice. Will be a while until I report back on this as I've never done a head before so will be taking my time
