I know, I know, this might be a stupid question, but just humour me...

Disco 1, 1995, 3.9 v8i. Does TDC mark on crank pulley = Cyl 1 at top of compression stroke?

I am trying to manually set the distributor to the correct position after removal and incorrect replacement positioning. Does anyone have a procedure for doing this? I have been trying to locate this in my Haynes, but haven't found instructions.

Not necessarily - it could be at TDC on the exhaust stroke.
If you're not sure that the dizzy is correct, then the only way to be sure is to take the rocker cover off and see what the valves are doing.
Both valves on #1 closed and crank pulley at TDC mark is what you're looking for.

When setting the engine to TDC on the compression stroke for cylinder #1, you must realize that the crankshaft rotates twice for every single rotation of the camshaft. So, if you simply set the crankshaft to TDC without looking at the position of the camshaft, you may actually be at TDC on the exhaust stroke for cylinder #1. So, after you get the crankshaft (by flywheel indication or by checking actual piston location), check the camshaft sprocket to make sure the camshaft alignment mark is at the TDC position as well.
could it be the dizzy is set 180 degrees out?
