what this is please? Please see attached photo

The yellow wire hanging out of the black tubing opposite the dipstick has snapped but I don't know what it is or what it does!
(You may need to enlarge the image)

Many thanks in advance
Angela

Hi Angela,
The wire goes to the sensor with all the oil round it on the intercooler to manifold hose. Only the later TD4s seem to have one of these sensors.

You shold be able to fix the wire back together with a small wire connecor.

There does seem to be a fair bit of oil coming out round the sensor, I'd check the seal on it and ask to have the crankcase breather filter (PCV) checked when you get it serviced. A bit of oil in the turbo hoses is normal but you don't want too much.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks, the car now will not drive over 5mph in drive - would this cause it do you know?

Many thanks
Angela

It might do, are there any warning lights on? It may be stuck in limp mode if the ECU isn't getting a response from the sensor that's been disconnected by the wire breaking.

more than likely will be but you do need to get that leak fixed it is either coming out where the sensor is which a fibre washer would sort out or the clips on your turbo hoses are loose hope this helps

Thank you both .. I think the oil is because I have put too much in and I need to drain some out - really I'm giving up, it's one thing or another! Just want my lovely car back :(

It's going into the garage tomorrow so they can tell me the damage, it also sounds like a plastic box is being dragged under the car yet there's nothing there?

So sad, I love my car but fearing the worst, it won't go over 5mph, I have no warning lights apart from battery and ABS which I Knew the brakes needed doing anyway

Angela

Hi Angela,

That is the intake air temperature sensor. It should be the work of no more than 15 mins to reattach the wire. I suggest you get it and the associated hose cleaned out as they are very oily.

The plastic box noise is probably the underbelly panel or some other plastic shield out of place - again, short work to put it back where it should be.

The restricted speed, as others have said, is probably 'limp mode' and could be due to many things. A quick scan on a code reader should start you off on the path to recovery.

Many many thanks for this, the car is going to a garage tomorrow and they are going to let me know.

I may - if any of you very lovely people don't mind, post on here what they say - being a female and not a mechanic they could tell me anything and I would be none the wiser - call me sceptical but I do know that a garage will see me coming and rub hands together!

Thank you so much
Angela

Hi Angela.
The wire is connected to the turbo boost temperature sensor, reconnect using an inline shrink wrap connector if possible, the sensor can be cleaned with a quick spray of carb cleaner, once it is removed from the hoses, also have the hoses checked and changed if need be, if the intercooler hose is split or leaking it can put the car in limp mode, are you having any black smoke ? to connect the wiring and change the hoses you should not be looking at paying out more than £60 including the hoses and labour.

You could also do with the EGR being looked at just in case it is stuck, when was the last time the EGR, manifold, MAP sensor removed and cleaned ? as your PCV filter been changed in the last 24 months ?

Thank you so much for this, the PC. Has not been changed, what is the EGR please? I really don't know anything about cars at all :/
Many thanks

Exhaust Gas Regulator. Sits on your right side in front of the engine when viewed. This allows the exhaust emissions to recycle back through the engine. They can block up with crud also if the Crankcase Breather is filthy this can cause issues. Check the turbo vent filter at the rear of the engine normally dangling downwards on your leftside when viewing. You want a very light brown filter if black or grey looking it needs replacing. The crankcase breather filter needs more work to find as you dismantle covers and airbox.

Hi Angela.
As above the EGR is Exhaust Gas Regulator, and fits to the inlet manifold right side it is an alloy unit, I remove mine twice a year and replace it with a clean one as I have a spares, pic below.

This EGR and manifold was taken form a friends car and had never been changed or cleaned out you can see from the photo's how the gunge can build up.

This follows through to the manifold.

A clean manifold next to the one that as been allowed to build up with gunk, through lack of maintenance.

The gunk will also block up the MAP sensor on the manifold, not allowing the ECU to have proper reading from within the manifold.

It seems to me you need a full service on your FL or at least get it checked over by someone who knows what they are doing, Arctic2

Artic2 I must say you do provide a very positive way to explain things with all the pictures now you have me wondering if I should get a new EGR as I tried to clean mine out and there is still plenty of hard grudge in there and I am not sure it is opening up properly to some one who does not know but also helps us older ones as well who do know photos are a great help

thanks again for the pictures

Hi Teddy.
take the EGR off scrap out any hard gunk with an old saw blade, seal off the diaphragm out let pipe, with a piece of hose or tape spray the inside with carb cleaner, wearing rubber gloves all the time as this black gunk is hard to remove from your hands, use also wire wool to clean out, once cleaned refit, but I must also advise it is best if you can clean out the manifold also, first removing the MAP sensor, the manifold is best cleaned out with oven cleaner, again remove scrap out any hard deposits with the saw blade, once you have let the manifold soak for and hour or two jet wash it out with a power wash one that is used for cleaning the patio etc, the seals can be reused to fit the manifold back, I can not remember if I have posted up an how to already if not I will try to do so over the weekend Arctic2

PS thought I had here is the link with photo's I take pictures of all the work I do on my cars

Thanks so much for your answer I was a mechanic when I was young back in the 1960s but never delt in anything but petrol but after having 2td4s I am learning a lot more but the old grey matter does not keep up lol
Thank you

You are welcome, I have lots of how to's but just need to find the time to post them up, I did intend to add to my post from when I purchased the FL1 and all the jobs that I have undertaken, will get there one day soon

Nice photos and explanation Artic2, thanks mate. Just wondering why you never bypassed the EGR? I was under the impression that was the best way to sort it once and for all.
