Seen these around for ages.
I'm a big believer in making stuff yourself instead of spending ridiculous RRPs for stuff. The discovery snorkels are as good an example of this as any. For what is essentially a length of plastic pipe, a snorkel top, and some bendy hose/ plastic moulding (and assorted bracketry), manufacturers want over 150 quid. Well that doesn't make sense to me.

I'm sure those who have forked out the money for a snorkel will say that they're worth the extra price, because they fit better, stand up to bashing better, but what is the actual truth? I'm never going to do anything other than greenlaning and atleast if it does get ripped off, it costs me only a small amount to replace.

I've bought myself a snorkel top, so the plan is, to have some flexible pipe running from the air box into the wing, and up towards the A-pillar, then have a decent grade plastic pipe running up the pillar, and jubillee clip & seal the lot together. Then make some simple brackets to attach the outside bits to the disco. (Sounds so simple in theory).

Anybody written a guide for this, or got any handy measurements or tips, before I start butchering my discos wing next week? lol

I've seen the southdown mounts on ebay which was what I was going to go for because it looked the simplest, but apparently, they simply guide the downpipe (which has a bend of a certain angle welded into it), into the wing, so that interior pipework can be attached to the end of the downpipe which no sticks out a little bit inside the wing.

That's probably a more robust way of doing it, but a little bit of a cheaper way, and a more versatile way, is to have flexi-pipe coming out of the wing, and connected to the pipe. Alot of homemade snorkels use this because it's easy and readily available. I think it looks good, and a good example of this is on the RWMIK:

I've been looking for some decent flexipipe to modify my snorkel but there are so many types of it on the bay with prices ranging wildly.

What sort are you going to use? or has anyone a recommendation on a good pipe?

sorry to hijack :D

Acksherly just found a link from Pikey in Nathans link to his homemade one.

In an ideal world I'd find a decent manufacturer online and order a metre or two, but in reality, it'll probably be one sunday morning, and I'll think sod it I'm not waiting, I'll get it done today, and I'll get some from B&Q or wickes or something.

Mine is made from aluminium pipe. Strong and light.Get yourself off to the scrapyard and have some rubber hoses off the lorries for running along inside the wing and connecting to air filter box . I welded nuts to the windscreen pillar, made a couple of straps from aluminium and voila :D Cheap as chips.

I bought the Southdown mouldings off eBay, plus 1m of alloy tube that fits the Southdown mouldings perfectly for £10 again off eBay.

It does not need the bend in the alloy tube as you can bring the flexi through into the alloy tube and seal/bond it in.

I got a second hand flexi tube and A post mount for £15.

In total it cost me £60

I fitted a snorkel off a 90 on mine and then run a bit of suction hose through wind to filter. Cost me 70 quid and a couple of hours of cutting:)
