I've got a 3.9 RRC, have done all sorts of jobs. It is an easy engine to work on. A cam shaft change is easy enoough and will give you the opportunity to do a few other bits and bobs as well.

Make sure you change the timing chain, replace the cam followers. I would consider replacing the oil pressure relief valve and spring.Thoroughly clean your plenum and ram housing, disassemble and clean your distributor (if fitted - you might have a later engine with coil packs). Bearing in mind what you have to take off you might consider a de-coke but depends how far you want to go.

Hi Craig
It all depends how handy you are with a bag of spanners.

I changed the camshaft in my 3.9 when i bought it, it was the reason it was cheap, i fitted a performance one as a replacement, made a differance and now i have a free flow air filter, 4 branch stainless downpipes and twin hand made exhaust with no cats, that lot made a world of differance.

I think it is an easy job, drain coolant, engine oil, remove rad, undo crank pulley before removing plugs, intake manifold, rocker covers and rockers, push rods and front cover, not much more, the worst part i found was leaning over the wings to get at everything.

As for the crank bolt, i used a good socket, breaker bar and a big hammer or:violent:

thanx for the encouraging replies lads.i,m going to get all needed parts next weekend and wait for a nice sunny warm day, put my shorts on,grab myself a few beers and i,ll have a crack at it;)until then i,ve got this clunky gearbox to sort out:(oh and the leaking sunroof:(cheers craig

Hi Craig
If you are intrested i have a performance camshaft for sale, it's brand new still in the box, i bought it cos i thought mine had gone for a second time, had only done 35k on the last one, stripped engine engine and the cam was perfect, so no need to replace it, eventualy found the problem was down to a cracked rotor arm , will post cam details if you are intrested, i am sure it's a Piper cam though.
Ian

cheers ian but i,m under the impression when banging in non standard cams you have to start shiming the rockers up properly and although im fairly confident doing the cam change i don,t want to make it any more complicated,or am i just talking a load of s__t:confused:

ian, what sort of price we looking at mate, and what sort of performance change does it make, anything noticable?did you say it was a piper.cheers craig
