Afternoon all!
I brought a 54 plate TD4 6 months ago. Although it seems to run fine the last receipt for a service was at about 60000 miles so I figured I'd get my hands dirty and service it myself (with a little help from my father in law who's a mechanic).

Replaced the oil filter, air filter, fuel filter (what a horrible job that is) and the turbo valve vent filter.
Changed engine oil, brake fluid, manual gearbox oil, IRD oil and coolant.
Was going to replace the aux drive belt but the existing one still looks immaculate so didn't bother.
Checked all under for signs of corrosion, cleaned out the rear drums and checked the pads on the front discs, which look like they still have loads of life left in them.

Just wanted to check that I haven't missed anything important/obvious as this is the first time i've 'serviced' a LR.

On a separate note, the front brakes are squeeking when the pedal is applied about half way. As the pads look good does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Someone suggested it might just need some copper grease applying?

Hi

Don't forget crank case filter as this seems to get missed and can cause some engine damage if it gets blocked unless the previous owner has changed it to the new BMW cyclone one then it will just be the toilet roll filter plenty of wright up on the forum part numbers etc. Changed mine to the new style but can't remember the part number but only around £23 for the internals as you don't need the complete unit well worth doing if not already

Paul

Nice one Paul, hadn't noticed that on the service interval list i've got but have just seen it mentioned on another thread as well.
Time to start a new to-do list!
Keith

Hi Keith, and welcome to LandyZone.

An impressive first post there.

One other item not on the service schedule is the rear diff oil.

LR in their wisdom did not provide a drain plug.

I used a syrnge to suck out the old oil - not a difficult job at all.

Nice one Singvogel missed that one it's always the out of sight out of mind that slip by reminds me to do mine and the gear box and the ird oops

Paul :D

Keith - your squeaky brakes could well be from a lip that has developed on the discs.

It's caused partly by wear and partly by rust expansion on the outer edge.

You then get a glazed effect just on the outer rim.

I just go round the edge tapping the rust off with a small hammer.

Most cars these days have softer discs than of old.

I'm told it's normal to need new discs with every 3rd set of pads.

hiya, hope u didnt mind me saying have u done the egr bypass yet, and checking the turbo hoses

also the pollen filter

hope u didnt mind me saying , ive still got to one day do my fuel filter as it hasnt been changed in 3 years, gulp

:eek: I thought I was being tight when servicing and fixing my cars. When brakes need doing with discs and pads I always put new discs on.

Any info and pictures to this crankcase breather filter mod would be good. Need to know if mines been done as I've just got my freelander. Ta

Any info and pictures to this crankcase breather filter mod

for 'info' .. do a LZ site search .. be a few threads on the subject

e.g .. http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/2006-td4-crank-case-filter-oil-seperator-213921.html

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
pics in 3rd post @ this link .. looks to be the same .. or very similar ..
shows 'bogroll' type filter .. and the bmw replacement part opposite
Range Rover TD6 2002 VOGUE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

cross section diagram on page 10 here

http://www.rover-club.net/graphics/manuals/16/m47r_diesel.pdf

on that diagram .. bogroll filter .. be no.2 .. 'yarn wrap'

( edit .. have attached the pic )
yarn type filter on left in housing ..
middle bit is just the housing .. no filter .. or bmw oil separator
part on right is the bmw part that replaces the yarn-filter

Cheers hd3. I've been reading a fair few threads on this and im now a bit lost but also dont know much about the td4 engine and where the filter actually goes on the engine. I want to make sure my engines got it and then change the filter?! Haynes manual on the way but read some where on here that it doesn't include it?!

and where the filter actually goes on the engine.

i think it's under the plastic cover that goes over the injectors ..

there's like 3 plastic housings/covers ..

nearest to back of engine is the air-filter cover .. allen bolts and oil filler cap ..

next towards the front is the cover over the injectors etc ..
beware that one of the bolts on that will blow oil if not tightened down properly :)
it's under that one you'll find the crankcase breather housing
( am pretty sure as i had the airfilter cover off today ..
( but i could have missed it in my haste ..

should be easy to spot the breather housing as it stands proud of the bit it sits on ..
btw: the red bit in the prev attached pic .. is the breather valve itself ..
and should be cleaned in white spirit once in a while ( according to haynes )
from what i've read .. bmw simply replace the whole unit every three years as part of their 'service' ..
so i guess giving the whole housing .. valve and separator unit .. a cleanout every three years should be good enough
( or IF the yarn filter is retained .. replace that every 12 months ..
( i cleaned the one i took out in white spirits when replacing it with the bmw part .. looks to be reusable .. at a guess ..

next plastic thing in front of those two be the air-intake / intercooler hose piping / housing .. thing ..
btw .. beware the drivers side screw that secures that one .. as it has a habit of rubbing a hole into the rubber intercooler hose in front of it .. easy to figure a solution ..

Thanks hd3. That's cleared it up a bit. The new filter that u get at BMW is the vortex seperator that replaces the land rover filter? When I finally get to look at it and say for arguments same mine has the filter can I just replace it with a new one OR but a seperator from BMW? How long does the BMW one last for? 3 years u say?

That BMW td4 is that not a ford motor? Was reading about the evoque and there 2.0 is a ford motor?

freelander 2 .. td4 .. engine be made by some other manufacturer ..

maybe it's renault 'n ford .. .. or just ford ..
or none of the above ..
it aint a bmw .. that's for sure :)

defo not a BMW

Point making maybe you can get your parts from a ford dealer cheaper as you are paying more for the name LR/BMW

Freelander 1 TD4 is a BMW M47R made in Steyr, Austria.

The cyclone/vortex Oil Separator you need costs 23 quid from any BMW parts dept.

Freelander2 / Evoque / Mazda / Mondeo etc. use a Ford-PSA diesel.

It's sometimes referred to as a Duratorq - one of Ford's DLD engines.

So really it's a Ford-Citroën-Peugeot engine.

They are made in Dagenham UK, Chennai India, and Trémery France.

When TATA bought LandRover from Ford they stayed with the Ford-PSA engine.

Parts for that engine might well be available from several places / sources.

maybe for the newer LR engines ..

but .. not that particular oil separator gizmo for the freelander1 td4 diesel ..
can only get that from a bmw parts supplier ..
same engine was in some rover/mg cars ..
during the short period bmw owned land-rover / rover .. etc ..

~~~~~~
thought i saw a LZ thread were it were mentioned that the ford transit uses the same engine as the newer LR models .. not sure if that's true or not ..
~~~~~

about a year ago .. i was considering spending some extended time in the usa ..
started to research land-rovers over there .. fancied a freelander2 ..
( although known by a slightly different name over there )
seemed that .. for the new cars at least .. only petrol engines were available ..
and i think the engine was made by volvo ..
( although can't be too sure without going back to the land-rover usa site :)
plans changed .. so i never did get to embark on a usa re-visit ..

~~~~~~~~
there you go :) .. mr.singvogel has the details above ..
all i could remember was that the newer vehicle's engines had some design connection with a french car-maker ..
