I have a TD5 defender in mint condition with all the goodies and just smashed the gearbox and engine has got a very loud tap to the rhythm, it will cost alot to fix so don't want to go there. However if I dismantle it and sell it off. Other than chassis and steering servo due to numbers. I can then claim on the insurance to say it's been STOLEN!!! This way I will get double money!!

HOW MANY PEOPLE DO THIS??? (don't be stupid and say yeah I did it, remember it's a public forum)

Do not PM me asking for parts as I DON'T have any!! It was an EXAMPLE.
I have a 1988 defender that falls to bits let alone sell the bent panels!!

Was just wondering if this goes on???

You've thought of it so chances are someone else has too, anyone with storage for a car could do it quite easily I'd imagine, so long as they keep tax, MOT & insurance up to date on the motor.

that's an old one...

I've heard of people doing that with brand new motorbikes...

strip the whole thing down, and destroy the chassi and sell the engine in bits, distroying the casing with the engine number.

Get the money off the insurance company, buy a damaged bike with solid frame and engine and put all the new bits from the other bike on it

not worth doing it if you get caught

I have NO intension of doing this but it's unlikely to get caught I would of thought? Unless you sell parts on your eBay account and still got chassis on your premises!

where do you think most of the best lr spares came from ,very common a few years ago,we had a small independant landy garage that run on stolen parts and insurance scams i think they paid you £500 or theres about ,stole it for you stripped it ,eventually police got involved ,shut them down but i didnt hear of any of them getting done

I'm sure the authorities could quite easily check your evilbay history, credit card, bank account etc, and find out if you had been selling loads of land rover parts or something?

It's amazing how many people do this and how many of them DO get caught. It's not just landrover owners that do this. I've recovered jags, Escort turbo's, Landrovers, Mitsubishi's etc after their owners have all tried this. Apart from losing your vehicle, getting done for fraud and wasting police time, the fine and possible prison sentence, getting insurance again afterwards can be a little bit problematic to say the least.
