Disc's n pads need changing?

You need to check if you have vented discs on the front, if so you will need to change calipers for solid discs.

I was under the, apparently mistaken, impression that all V8s had vented discs but found that mine didn't.
 
My 91 has a 5/8 bolt for Caliper and same for top swivel pin brake pipe bracket, a 9/16 for stub shaft, a big flatbladed and hammer for lock washer, a 52mm hub nut spanner, and a 12 point 9/16 bolt for brake discs, and a big mallet to get it off.

If you haven't done your wheel nearing and seals recently, it's a good idea to do them when you're in there. For that you need a small cold chisel and a lump hammer.

Think that's everything.

I never needed a press for the discs, just gradual increase in hammer size and various obstacles like blocks of wood, kerbstones and/or steel drain grids!

A press would be the scientific approach! :D

I am VERY techincal you know....





(and I ran out of increasing sized hammers) Mine were stuck together quite convincingly, they broke the last one into bits, it just shattered in the press..
 
Just finished the rear disks and all calipers on 1995 300tdi manual
I agree with Mr noise plenty of hitting to get the disks off the hubs:eek:
Also sit the hub in one of the removed wheels flat on the ground to undo and do up the disk bolts (but you knew that)
Dont forget to use threadlock on the bolts:D
Didnt do the front disks as I baulked at taking the whole swivel thingie apart:doh:
 
You don't have to take the swivel apart to do a disc...

Just remove the top swivel pin bolts to release the brake pipe and quickly screw them back in to prevent oil leakage.

Should be easy!

On mine you have to remove the brake pipe (single pipe on these calipers) to get at the pin bolts

When I changed the calipers all of the old fluid was removed.I noticed some black slimey goo in the master cylinder resevoir and cleaned it out.Filled with new fluid and bled the system but peddle is not as solid as I hoped:eek:
Do you reckon it could be the master cylinder:rolleyes:

52 mm Box spanner for hub nuts and 13 mm and 14 mm Bi hex (12 point sockets) for calipers and discs , 11 or 10 mm mm spanner for brake pipes ??? , Breaker Bar or Air impact wrench as the bolts are locktited and will be rusted in . ( use plusgas ). If ABS you also need to swap exciter ring on rear discs whch use a small spanner / socket possibly 8 mm I can not remember . If you want to improve your brakes on the front fit vented discs and calipers from a 110. ( they take bigger pads ) Regard Jonathan
