Hey guys,

Just saw a video on Youtube showing off the Disco. It's kinda like a promo video. It also shows a short clip of a Disco towing a train. (or so it seems) Quite interesting and surprising. Is this within the normal capabilities for a Disco?

Here it is:

Sorry if this is a repost, if not then enjoy!

Hardly any rolling resistance from steel wheels on rails and no binding brakes on a couple of carriages, they probably weigh 30/35 tonnes at a guest on a level track.

A Disco will pull a normal fully loaded Artic on a level road provided the brakes are off in 1st low ratio you can even change up once the weight is rolling, but stopping it maybe something else.

There was a promo done by Rover at the launch of the Disco, when they went to one of the preservation railways and showed a Disco 1 in Police livery with rail adaptation gear towing a four-carriage section of train.

It was in one of the glossy LR mags around the time of the Disco 20th anniversary.

Our guys regularly tow loaded artics from motorway live lanes to the H/S using the newer Disco's, they won't try it with the Jap 4x4's

they weighed 170tonnes, it could pull it no worries, but they had to use the carriage brakes to stop :p

police stickers to show the police how it would be a great tool

Could both the Disco and the Freelander 1 TD4 tow a 115 ton plane then? (Yes guys, this is a SERIOUS question about a Freelander!!)

in low 1st a diesel landy will pull it( so not gaylander then)

i'm guessing a V8 would but would 'work' the clutch hard

auto i'm unsure of the strength but i bet it would

maybe on the run way but even with a lift kit i doubt any land rover could pull that plane :)

But why not? That train would probably weigh heavier than the 757-200. Also, the wheels on a train are steel so per wheel, there's less resistance. However, a 757 has fewer wheels whereas a train has 8 per carriage.

A VW Touareg with extra ballast can pull an empty Boeing 747-200. (an old jumbo jet) So are you sure a Freelander TD4/Disco TD5 cannot pull a Boeing 757 (Short to medium range narrow body aircraft) at MTOW? (Maximum takeoff weight = 115 tons in this case)

I seem to recall some years ago when the D2 TD5 hadn't long been out ('98, '99 ish) there was an advert (picture) in a national newspaper of one pulling a Jumbo :)
