As everybody knows the Discovery has a rust problem esp the earlier models etc but does anybody know if the brains at LandRover themselves ,have taken any real efforts to solve it ? and how are the later models doing regarding this problem ? Ady

the vehicle was designed with a 10 year life expectancy...........most don't fail mot on corrosion til after 10 years old so they don't really need to do anything..... if they made vehicles designed to last forever they would be putting themselves out of business

Must of been to that damn shop 50 times in the last few days but avnt seen her again yet ,but im ready with my plan ! watch this space .

ive got a dicso2 td5 es had her just over two years now only probs with the dredded rot the only place is the chassis over the rear axle could do with cleaning off and treating. ive been really lucky with mine tyresx4 disks and pads the only thing i have had to change, still got a prob with air sus but its an now and again rear left drops.

The problem is the stuff they use to protect the chassis and underbody. Its a paint that works well for the first 5-6 years but then it goes brittle, hardens and cracks. Inevitibly this lets in moisture which starts a process of surface rust which distorts and cracks more and more of the underseal.

Also it never helps that its an off roader, so it will regularly get a splattering of mud and dirty water etc. Also it will be used through the winter, where with a more normal car you'd think twice about going out in the worst of it.

Other 4x4s of the era rust, for example Shogun chassis, and I've seen Shoguns with snapped rear axles due to weakening from rust then mild off roading. Diahatsu Fourtrak sills turn into sieves too. Bear in mind that many lesser off roaders don't get nearly as much off road use, too.

Other manufacturers have done things like switching to galvanised metal, or aluminium, etc for longevity, eg Audi/VW.
