The NSR wheel will have been spinning. In centre diff lock you will have always 1 wheel on each axle allowed to spin.

With axle lockers no wheels are allowed to spin, power is sent to wheels with and without grip. The problem with standard Diffs is that power is sent to wheels without grip, a serious side effect to an otherwise brilliant design!

Spot on!
I'm thinking of a cheaper way round having locker is to have a way of braking the wheel without grip, can't be that hard and would work well enough in that situation imo

Independent wheel braking is a simpler option. I would imagine, not that I have any idea about it, that once you start moving you would need to be able to release the braked wheel so you can take advantage of grip. Braking would need to be by hand operated levers to make it easier. I have seen trial challenge vehicles with this type of braking. Hand operated levers. Then again they also had four wheel steer which is great along with axles that turn as well like big foot.

I will personally stay with air lockers but they will have to wait due to lack of funds. Perhaps they can go on the Salisbury axles.

Say Matt, do you know if challenge at Tongham have Southdown snorkels in stock? I need to get one on t his weekend before I go nuts not using the motor.
 
Fiddle brakes.

On demand abs controller would be nice, but thats basically traction control. The problem with traction control/wheel braking is that you are stopping a wheel and/or you have to become stuck before it attempts to get you unstuck.

Axle lockers are the only option I'm afraid :(

Detroit is a viable option, a mate has one in the back of his 90 and it's great, but can't be good for tyre wear on the road. It just isnt necessary to have the axle locked all the time, but at least it is fit and forget, and does the job as well as an ARB when necessary.

KAM Diffs are great but people fear the electrics versus old fashioned air.

ARBs are the one to aim for basically, and rightly so. It's just a shame they're so bleedin' expensive, but I suppose it keeps the riff raff out :D :p

I have noticed that on your rear bumper you have a central shackle that pivots. I intend to use one of t here on mine utilising a class three hitch fitting. Do you know where yours came from.

I have seen some locally but they are not really what I'm looking for. I take it yours swivels.

Hi mate

Yes mine is a swivelling chap.

Basically theres a bracket that bolts through the back of the chassis (tow bar holes) and then the four bolts you can see in the bumper bolt into this. The swivelling eye thingy is then supported almost entirely by this chassis bracket so it works pretty well. I know that's not what you asked but I thought I'd give you the whole shiz, wine & dine you, that's why they call me Terry Tibbs.

The recovery eye is basically this:

Mine is galv steel, it was supplied by the guy who made the bumper, I assume he machined it himself because all the ones on eBay are stainless.

I have stainless in my front bumper, they're fine.

Some people don't rate them but I've given them the abuse 'de rigueur' and they seem to perform superbly.

I noticed looking back at your photos that you haven the bracket behind the bumper. I have a 60x75x5 THK angle welded to the bumper which goes over the toward mount holes. On the front of this I am looking to locate the swivel. I was going to have two Dixon and bate pins as well so it gives plenty of options for recovery and towing etc.

I finished the frame off tonight and it is very solid. More tomorrow and then I may get to the stage where I leave it on the vehicle as I build it up.

I'm not really set up nor experienced at heavyweight fabrication, bit of a bummer cos it sounds like an easy way to make the perfect product!

I did think about welding the rear diff in true pikey Motorsport fashion
but it will be a bitch on anything with tight turns etc,
So will get some cash together at some stage and go for air lockers I reckon!
 
Ian I'm sure they will have mate speak to Paul and see what he's got as I was in there yesterday and they keep loads of stuff in stock +a bit of 2nd hand stuff

He said he had a disco all ready to go with some proper kit was for sale, if only I knew then what I know now I would have got a ready to go motor!!

had a look on their site and they only sell the safari type which at 205 quid is a little steep. I will however pop in and question them about some other stuff.

You'll never get as good a value for money vehicle as an old discovery now.

No it's not a rose tinted spectacles, biased thing - its true.

You'd do yourself a favour to keep it, repair it and use it when the bad weather or apocalypse comes.
