Discovery radio / cassette removal

Its my first post in this forum thought I would join up and share all the tips, help and advice that the forum has to offer.
I have owned my first ever Discovery (2001 TD5) 3 weeks now I love it, why did I not buy one before. Any excuse to get out in the truck and I'm gone
I'm sure I will find this forum very useful.

My Discovery is as it left the factory but I have a few small things I would like to do.
All the mechanical items have been checked and are all fine I have also had the vehicle fully serviced so that I know its all all fresh and ok.

Right, my first mod. I want to replace the OE radio cassette I believe its a C42 type basic fitment at the time. I have tried and failed to remove the old unit with removal pins, it has 2 small holes at each end but it wont budge. What I'm I doing wrong, it usually a simple operation. :doh:
I have done a search on radio removal the my type does not come up.
Please help!!


Once I have some music sorted I going to start on letting her breath a bit as I'm told they respond very well to a few changes.

Welcome to the madhouse,
I know how you feel, only had my Disco 3 weeks aswell, it's my second one though.

If it just has 2 holes one at each side, are they round?
If they are they will need a small allen key 2.5mm

I made two U shapes from a coat hanger to push into the holes as I had to press to release the four clips simultaneously. If it's the first time the radio has being removed then it's a tight fit perhaps I should say a very tight fit
Of course your radio may be different to mine.

Some later D2's need keys to remove the radio unit PC5-93 Landrover Discovery Stereo Release Keys on eBay (end time 26-Nov-09 17:53:08 GMT)

Try just using four separate bits of wire, you'll feel each one disengage the latches - then stick your fingers in the tape deck hole and pull.

Try sitting on the centre console to do this as well, you'll get a straighter pull on it!

probably a very tight fit. i use a selection of small medium n large screwdrivers and prise it out once the clips have been released. a rag on the dash helps reduce scratching

i use rivets

They do respond to tuning, very well. I was talking to someone who had took their td5 to a firm called td5 alive. He reckons it goes like hell (for a disco).

I'm totally new to disco ownership so I'll be asking whats best to do. I'm going to run the truck for a few weeks first just to make sure everything is ok so after christmas i'll be looking for some more humph
Any advice is welcome and as I said at the mo its totally stock.

Good call on the rag, my dash is very good so I dont want any slipped screwdriver rash:doh:

Thanks for the welcome You were spot on, I called in on a local landy repair shop to-day and one of the fitters told me the same. I came home and sure enough it was an easy job once an allen key was deployed
I still have a small issue which i'll have to look at as i've fitted the new head unit but for some reason when I switch off the radio looses its memory:doh: must be a problem with the perma live feed.
What disco did you have before? I looked for a 300tdi for ages but gave up when I could not find one without all the water leak and rust issues.
I must admit I'm pleased that I went for a TD5, I do like it:clap2:

My D2 02 plate had a BMW fitting on the radio. A kind independent radio installer removed it for me. The holes needed a very long allen key fitting.

Four pins about 6cm long, I used wire coat hanger, gently placed in till I thought was right, then used above method only medium screwdriver top and bottom in the middle and gently prised out. no way was it going to come out sticking my hand in the cassette slot, I spent an hour just trying to pull it out by hand till I read Si844. So thank you Si844
