 Any ideas as to what may be my problem, coming back from Stockport on the M60 heard a sudden knock and then a severe grinding and squealing noise from what sounded like the rear there is some noise from the brakes when braking which was not there before, checked diff oil level it was full but colour is greyish aswell any advice would be appreciated.:p

Any chance something is stuck between the disc and the guard plate?
Maybe it picked something up from the road, or maybe a brake pad is breaking up?

Wheels off time and have good look at calipers and pads, and check nothing is trapped behind a disc.

Check everything that turns ....

bearing and breaks would be first call fer me, sounds just like when i had a bearing go on the motorway. also had a break pad break apart but that locked me brakes up on me!

Have lifted the back end and removed wheels, bearings ok but both wheels spin when in gear and diff lock on whilst front wheels remain on the ground also a rumbling sound whilst turninig the hubs, any advice would be appreciated.

Do they spin in opostie directions when you lift the back end up?
or does just one spin when lifted?
No they don't spin in oposite directions and you cant force them in opposite directions, have found out that there is severe play in the n/s/r wheel and the brakes are constantly grinding, movement is left and right and minor top to bottom, if you push the wheel towards the car you can hear a quite a loud knocking noise on the the wheel.

Take the halfshaft out and have a look to see if it is in one piece, need to undo the 5 or 6 14mm head bolts.

Sound to like the half shaft or the diff. Only wonder how come you didn't loose drive?????

when my transfere box was fooked i still had drive, but same thing happend to me, when i lifted one end i could spin the wheels freely when they should have been locked to the front.
same suggestion from me, undo and remove the half shaft, if there is no damage there then it doesnt hurt to check fluids while you there.

 Depending on weather we are pulling the axle apart on thursday, but when the rear was up, and when the wheels were turned the rear prop never moved, but did when we dropped one side to the ground, there was slight movement in the prop, so can only wait and see, will inform what we find hopefully at the weekend, ta.

Severe mechanical derangement somewhere!
In my old Safari I had a funny one - it sheared all the bolts that held the crownwheel to the diff-cage! I was towing a truck at the time ....

I would like to hear what it turns out to be.

Bearings, totally shot they fell out when we stripped the axle, and the bearing shell has welded itself onto the stub axle, the diff was totally fuffed the gears literally fell out when we took it off the car, replaced it now and will hope that it will be fine when we get the wheels back on, cheers.

Play in the wheel indicates a bearing problem, you can remove the halfshafts, lock the transfer box and drive the car if you feel the bearing is not at fault. The reason for gray diff oil is the seal fails behind the stub axle on one or both of the halfshafts, the oil works its way into the bearings washing out the grease, the bearing fails shortly after. Clean everything thoroughly and include a couple of diff oil change over the next few weeks as the bearing filings will find there way to the diff gears. replace both shaft seald and the offending bearing. OOps bit late with that one!!!

Amazingly enough I have been told that my disco does not have stub axle oil seals even thought their is space their for them, when we stripped the stub axle their was no seal present, but we are going to put one in for safety sake, cheers.
