Discovery Fuel Filter warning

I'm getting the "water in fuel filter" dash warning light intermittently illuminating while driving my 03 Discovery TD5, the fuel filter was replaced less than 10k ago.
Does it need replacing again or is this a symptom of another problem?

Anyone out there have any thoughts?

I change mine every 10 k.

Sorry to state the obvious, but have you drained any water out of the filter recently ?.

They sensor can play up. New ones are around £ 15.00.

wot he said ^^^^^^. I change mine every 6k or anually at the start of june. Whichever comes first. many people (myself included) get shot of the water sensor and have just a standard water drain valve instead.

Hi Jon42
Not a lot to worry about. If you can undo the filter drain screw, just drain 1ltr off & check for water. If only a little,keep draining it off, the lite should go off after a couple of days.
Mine used to come on in extreme wet conditions, was shorting out in the plug.
I generally check my filter drain once a month - keeps it un-seized & you know you've got clean fuel.
If you can't you should take the filter bowl off & drain it into a container, to look for water.

Just to add.

If you do undo the sensor a bit to drain off some water/diesel, dont overtighten it. It doesnt need to be that tight, and you,ll break it.

Not that I,ve ever done it. ( err cough ).

Thanks for the advice folks, new filter and sensor on order, I'll put a note in my diary to drain it more regularly (I'd missed that off my list of regular maintenance!)

If you are fitting new sensor make sure terminals in wiring plug are not choroded as the high resistance brings on water light.

Are u sure about that?...cos i think it's the other way around...water's conductibility is better than diesel's and that's the gist of it...so if the terminals are choroded it might not show the water even if present....or am i wrong?

If terminals on loom plug are choroded (green) light comes on on dash. I presume because of resistance being high but result the same.
