it would be interesting to see if it could be done the other way round ,ie make up a spgot shaft to fit in place of quadrant and roller on the gear box top with pin to fit in the yoke of the disco box

You mean rather than messing with the innards of the box mess with the outer piece and move the selector that way ? :scratching_chin: :scratching_chin: :scratching_chin:

Hmmmmm possibly, I will get my engineering hat on and have a think on sat when I'm with the box. Gonna have a look at some pics now and see if I can think of something easy to make on the lathe or milling machine that would work. Happy to experiment on my box to see if it works or theres a bust up box in the yard I can try with

you are only replacing a piece that fits on either top or box shaft not actually destoying anything ,the one thing i thought of was if youd get enough throw either side to get 1 ,2 ,5 and reverse, but it looks like you would

Looking at the design of the gear lever I think you could make a little bodge to make it work instead of doing anything to the selector end.

If you were to use some bar on either side and create a prism it should retain enough rigidity to be able so shift whilst moving the selector position forward. Would just look like you'd moved the selector on the disco into the centre once covered up and then if the middle of the prism was wide enough you could have the diff lock going through it. Wouldn't look like a normal box from LR but would possibly work, however I've looked into it a little further and had a think with the exploded diagrams

And then as to what I think you're getting at without measuring up the defender housing position etc I wouldn't be able to do more than a rough sketch but using the online diagrams.

Number 4 is the piece where the gear change begins as its on the selector shaft

And on the defender the selection comes from 21 with 17 supporting it

17 would have to be modified to fit the discovery shaft that comes out from the box essentially turning a vertical to horizontal and with the measurements in hand I reckon I could knock something up on the lathe/mill. Will look into getting hold of a selector to measure up and experiment with

replacing 17 with a pin like disco is what id thought ,i was wondering about whether that would effect gear positioning but then realised yoke on disco pivots the shaft from under and defender from above

reckon it should be ok then ?

may be worth investigating this further as I presume it would make a nice mod for people wanting to change a disco to fender position cheaply

James got hold of an LT77 top housing for £20 so we're good to go ;)

Will be making up the adaptor tomorrow and then I'll try it next weekend on the box

Also picked up a salisbury axle off a 110 special vehicles utility :)
