Good Afternoon,

I am in need of some advise / help!

Have a old Discovery 300 on the farm, this has not MOT and will never go on the road again however I am in the market for some tyres. I have seen before you can get some tractor / dumper tyres however can anyone advise where to get them from and what size is required as I want them to fit on my 245/70 R16 Rims.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Mark

You have given a tyre and not a rim size, it seems your just looking for an aggressive mud tyre which will fit your standard 16" x 7J rim. Loads of mud tyres on the 4 x4 tyre web sites.
This link will tell u what size u can fit, without or with body mods. http://web.archive.org/web/20100810045805/http://www.members.shaw.ca/jbarge/tires.html

Thanks, sorry but tyres are something im not the best with as never fully understood the tyre and rim sizes. The Tyres I have on at the minute are 245/70 R16 however by what you are saying the rims are 16 x 7J thankyou, the problem is I don't want normal off road tyres I require tractor / dumper tyres if possible to fit on my rims but with them been different sizes I don't understand what size would fit!

You might find 600/16 will suit your purpose, and they will have the smallest profile of a 16" tyre, if you could find 15" rims you will have more choice of profile and width!!

I would think a set of Insa Special Track or similar would be about same price as the tractor tyres. Not so heavy and aggressive, either, so less potential to damage the drivetrain.
Might be a good chance of getting a set like that part worn, as well!

Do you have a specific use or reason why you want tractor tyres? It's certainly possible. But tbh I would think there are better options for the most part.

Dumper tyres won't magic up loads of traction for you.
They aren't too silly, to be fair. Dumper is go anywhere, as is a tractor. Big footprint, and the angled treads clear away the mud until you find something hard. And you can go down quite a way when the wheels are as high as your shoulder.
Downsides are the terrible ground damage they do, and the possible effect on the halfshafts, Tractor halfshafts are about 2" thick!

And dumpers have portal axles with loads of low down torque. Plus they tend to be articulated so just turning the wheels changes where the wheels are. Don't stop em getting stuck to **** though.

Try taking the skip off! :D
Back in the eighties a mate had a s1 with a 3.5 v8 and dumper tyres. It was very capable indeed! IIRC the tyres were banned in trialling about the same time.

We take the skips off at work and fit a few different bit son em. They still get stuck. So do the big adt's but they are much better at self recovery
