I've been looking at an 06 discovery 55 plate TDV6 but it is automatic.

In the past I've always avoided automatics and prefer to purchase manuals as automatic boxes can be expensive to repair.

Does anyone know of problems / issues with the automatic box or are they a good buy?

Thanks

Sorry I cant help with you question regarding the gear box but am I the only person that thinks the new Discovery looks like a van, I know they probably out perform the old Discovery's but they just don't look right.

I've had a 95 disco since new and been really please with it. It is now not far off 200,000 miles so thought it is about time to update....

RB,

I've got a Disco 3 HSE at present as a courtesy car, had it a week, it's an HSE Auto and I think it's a lovely car to drive.

I'm not sure to be honest about the problems you may encounter later in it's life but I must admit I wouldn't want to drive the Manual after driving the Auto.

It's just such effortless driving and I'm getting about 26 MPG which I feel is very good especially considering as I said earlier that's it's a courtesy car (if you get my drift).!! :D

If your looking at a 55 Plate then you've still got at least 18 months warranty so all will be covered by that, you can always extend the warranty when it expires but no doubt that will cost a fortune.

All the best with whichever you choose.

Dont waste your time and money !!!!!

My Disco3 Auto is the worst car ive ever had, At present its sat at the dealers in bits waiting for a new wiring loom, there on back order, could be 6 or 7 weeks before i get it back !!!!!

Oh, and the dealers aint got a clue cos Land Rover keep em in the dark and feed em on crap !!!!!

My mate has just got one and it's a cracking motor. It's a 54 reg HSE Auto. I've driven it a few times and it realy is a nice drive, ive driven a loads of cars with my job but never anything like that. Even took it to briercliffe last week and it did great. i'm saving up for one now, so might have one by the time i'm 50!

The autobox itself doesn't cause problems but a fault with any other ecu may make the auto box default to 3rd and say "transmission fault" on the dash, especially if its an ABS or similar fault.

I wouldn't worry about the gearbox, its everything else you should worry about, the wiring in these cars is **** and corrodes super fast causing no end of problems, great car, just dont get it wet!!!!

***Our 05 plate TDV6 S Auto has gearbox problems!!!!!***

the gear lever was becoming stiff then about a month down the line it began to jump out from drive into neutral without warning. it went for repairs and came back fine (it's my mum's car so haven't seen any job sheets yet). 6 months later the gearstick became stiff again and was also, once again, jumping straight out of drive whilst on the go. it has now returned from the dealer with a new stick assembly but no real answers (unsurprisingly). i'll be investigating further but does anyone else know of this problem???

hi in reply to the stick going stiff is the pivot pin underneath the car that holds the change cable seizes up in the rain and causes the gearstick to become stiff and when you engage a gear the cable bends instead of slides and pushes the gearstick back hope that helps, great car to drive the auto no real problems with gearbox but if i was you keep the 300 so much more reliable and cheaper to run.

nice1! cheers pal

If you really want one, get an auto, as an awful lot of people with manual boxes are having clutch problems at pretty low mileages, and are having to fight with LR over whether this is a 'normal wear and tear' issue, or a 'clutch not up to the job issue'. LR warranty is too 'iffy' in my book, and I certainly regret buying my TDV6 auto. (although its not the g/box thats faulty), just a load of other things! Also dealerships vary greatly, some are great and get on with sorting things, some, well, I wouldn't trust to change a filament, and just haven't got a clue!....... Just my two penneth.
