Evening all, we have a 1994(m reg) 300tdi manual non abs. Come to nip up my rear wheel bearing today, the question i need to know is does the rear bearing have an inner and outer seal like the fronts do. Mine doesn't have the outer. Also on the fronts there is a washer that sits between the bearing and the first nut, should there be one on the rear also. My rear bearing seems to be lubed by the axle oil is this right.
cheers in advance alex

id say yes it should have a seal.... needs something to keep the crap out !! and the axle oil in

There is a lip seal in the axle casing, this runs on a machined portion of the half shaft and keeps the axle oil in. You need to be careful not to damage this one when the half shaft is refitted. If your getting axle oil dripping out then its the seal inside the axle tube knackered, which then allows the hub to fill with oil.

The only lip seal in the hub is on the inner side, which rubs against the machined shoulder on the stub axle. This (theoretically) keeps crap and water out. In practice water does get in which is why you *should* strip and repack your hubs after wading. On the outer side of the hub, there is a paper gasket under the halfshaft drive flange, which seals between this and the hub itself.

Thanks for the replys. Am i right in thinking that there should be a thick washer between the bearing and the inner nut. As the fronts have this but my rear doesn't seem to have this. Just the insert that sits inside the outer bearing cage. Need to replace the bearing anyways and the seal as its leaking behind the disc.

Yes, there's a thrust (thick) washer between the adjuster nut and the bearing.

From inside the hub ... bearing, thrust washer, adjuster nut, tab washer, locknut ... ;)

thought there should be mine doesn't seem to have one hence why the bearing cage is now oval. i bet you don't get the new washer with the bearing kit either. Are the rear bearings as easy to do as the fronts. Did 300tdistu's last week they were a doddle to do

If anything the rears are a tad easier than the front .. no swivel swivelling around .. ;)

However, having looked at a parts list it seems that earlier Discos had a spacer, not a washer there .. Hope Iannotts doesn't mind but have a look at the following which shows it better than I describe ... Mine is a later version, so has the lockwasher (L) as per the right hand drawing, though I was going from memory (just fixed a broken bearing/stubshaft) and didn't know about the earlier difference till I looked at this just to confirm .. :)

thanks alot for the diagram. Looking at it would say is the first one to JA032850. So no washer inbetween bearing and nut just the spacer. When i did stu's front bearings on his 200tdi they had the washer in between the bearing and nut, which made wonder. Oh well looks like a bearing on order, like i said the seals need doing anyways. And also front c.v joint and swivle seal. getting used to the whole weekend under the disco thing, and my better half has gotten used to talking to my feet. lol. Once again to you paul, landy.man and to stu for the help.

Hi all,

Sorry to revive such an old thread.

I'm suspecting my rear offside wheel bearing is on it's way out, as it's making a few noises. Enquired on an eBay site that had Bearmach bearings for £15... and I was advised the bearings are the same front and rear for my N reg (1995) Disco.

Is this not the case?

Cheers, Jack.
