I have this strange intermittent fault with my hazard warning lights. They will suddenly come on when using the indicators. Nothing will make them stop except tuning the engine off, removing the key then restarting. The same thing has happened a few times when the headligts are on. These times the indicators were not on at all. Removing the key seems to be the only cure again.
Anybody got any ideas?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

i would start at the hazzard relay probably got dirt/water in and contacts corroded also check contacts on indicator stick could be shorting-out give clean up with some emery paper or some think like that then check all contacts where bulbs sit regards colin

Sounds like a problem with the alarm / immobiliser. Check all the contacts / bulbs etc, but I reckon you`re into wiring and stuff! Try resetting it with the key sequence in the drivers door lock, if you`ve got it.

hi nick ive just sorted a problem that started out very similer but got worse effecting other parts of the electrics turned out that the fuseable links in the loom on o/s inner wing might be worth taking a look

Thanks. Sorry for delay in replying to your posts. I’ve been away for a while. I will try checking all these. It could be some time before I know when I’ve fixed the problem, as it is very intermittent. Do any of you know if there is an inertia switch that puts on the hazards and unlocks the doors in the event of an accident. I’ve read somewhere there is one on the 300 tdi but I can’t find it.

Hi Nick, I'm sure there must be a relay because the same thing happened to me in Wales, I hit a deep pot hole at 40mph ...the hazards came on and the windows opened. On stopping the doors would not lock and the hazards didn't work from the switch. It took an hour of off/on with the ignition and pressing the lock button to cure it. The ironic thing was I left the car to have a minute and a cup of tea because I couldn't cure it ...when I came back all had reset! To this day I don't know what caused the problem.

Any of you out there got any ideas?

Weird one this, happened to me today on the A9 between Perth and Dundee. Pulled in at the first opperchancity and turned the engine off, hazards remained on then went off on second click on the ignition.

Faulty inertia switch, I think. The car has a 'feature' where if its bumped really hard (like, in an accident) the central locking activates to open the doors and the hazards are automatically turned on. If it does it on low impact bumps (ie off roading or similar) or randomly, I think its a faulty switch somewhere.

The inertia switch is part of the alarm ecu and it can become over sensitive. It works by sensing the inertia of the 'bump' if this meets the preset limit it then will unlock the doors, if they are locked, and switch on the hazard flashers.... the doors don't open.

I seem to remember my Disco had 2 red 'relay looking' units in the engine bay identified as the inertia sensors. Mine was an overseas import I brought back from Cyprus but should be the same I reckon. Check the connections...
