Hi. there is is a problem with the aircon on my facelift td5. There are no fault codes on the display, when pressing the two buttons, the air con compressor pulley was slightly stuck, but I managed to move it by hand and now spins but does not engage. Is there way of testing the compressor to get the clutch to engage? Or any other things to check, or could it be low pressure or a leak? Thanks

does it engage when belt is back on? i take it you tried with belt off, i would guess that by hand will no be enough force to engage it, maybe take it and get it re gased, checked etc

I have a Discovery 2 TD5 ES, facelift model. Sorry for not introducing myself. I live in South Wales, and as the weather is getting like summer i thought i better sort out the Air Con to keep the kids cool. I have since foumd that the Air Con fan has siezed, and i need a new / second hand one. Anyone know of any bargins? I hope once this is fitted and tested it may work? I have the Rave cd, is it possible to send 12 v to the compressor to engage the clutch, to see if this is ok, even if the refrigerant pressure is low? Daniel

Its highly likely that you have a leak causing all the refridgerant to leak out. There is a pressure swith on top on the drier/reciver which senses this and dissables the system. ( why your clutch wont engage ).

I,m not 100% sure, but I know that a seized fan can cause a fuse to blow, and whether or not this affects the whole AC system or not I dont know.

I would imagine iys HIGHLY likely that you have corrosion on the fluid pipe where it goes through the front slam panel. This will be around the " P clip " retaining at this point. ( very common corosion point ).

The fans are also VERY prone to seizing as they are set to come in at quite a high temerature. ( not often seen in the UK ).Many folk are replacing them with cheaper, more reliable fans of ebay.

My advise would be to take it to an AC specialist, NOT QUICK FIT, as the pressure test they do for leaks is done under vaumn which can actually suck the rubber of the " P clip " down over the corrosion and pass the test.

Good luck !.

Thanks for that, i will check tomorrow. Do have a description of the replacement fan that you say are used instead of original. I am trying to source a working second hand fan, but no luck at min. Thanks

evening gentlemen i too have a non engaging aircon pump so today i went and got a pressure gauge and checked the pressure to see if it needed a regas. the pressure was reading just over 100psi when apparantly its ment to read under 25 if it needs gas and between 25-40psi normal.so now i dont know what is going on. help help.

here is a compatible cheap fan http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/12-electric-fan ...be aware that this fan is used by the engine management too to protect the engine from overheating in case of viscous fan or other cooling issues

IMO the best thing is to go regass the system to rule this out cos the dual pressure switch will cut out the aircon clutch if the pressure is not as it should be... then if it doesnt work you can go further... the clutch has a fuse (F6) and a relay(R11) in the engine bay fusebox... check these too, you can swap R11 with R13(horns) for test

Thanks for your help, i ordered a second hand condenser fan today from ews. I have checked the system and there is no gas in the system. It is completely empty. I have checked the p clip on the front slam panel, although corroded, it does not appear to have any pin holes. My next step is the pressure / vacumn test the system to see where the leak is. Any other common areas where leaks occur? Anyone used a draper vacumn testing kit? Daniel

Sorry gents
Mine was the fuse.changed it and it runs perfectly.checked the gas again and its 40 psi which is ok.thanks for help and answers anyway.cheers.

Hi. The latest in the air con problem. Had the air con recharged yesturday, and all seemed to work ok. Three hours later and it didn t. I then found a leak forward of the p clip on the 90 bend (horizontal) before receiver drier. If i change the pipe should i have system emptied first or just go for it? Shall i change the recicer drier as well. Lr 80 pound or after market 20 pound? The large pipe on Top of the compressor got very hot too. Is this common or due to the leak? Thanks daniel

Dont know who you took your Disco to but they should have pressure tested the system to find out why you had no pressure in the first place. When you replace the parts that have failed you need to get a pressure test,if it holds the test then you need to get the system evacuated with a vacuum pump to draw out any moisture as moisture will cause the system to fail prematurely. Before the aircon guy re-gasses the system make sure he uses the proper amount/grade PAG oil as some of this will have been lost when the pipe burst.Worst case if he doesnt top up the oil the compressor will fail.Hope this helps :)

Sorry to jump on this post but I'm in need of a new fan as well ( disco 2 facelift td5 2003 ) is it a pull or push fan? And is the above compatible? Thanks.
