Hello all, I've been a long time reader of this excellent forum and have finally got round to joining! I have really been doing a lot of searching and hunting for parts/information on my query. I currently own a Disco 2 with a 2" lift springs & shocks but really want some more height with the hope of being able to go bigger with the tyres when they need changing and try and clear a slightly better rear departure angle!

I've been looking long and hard at sticking some 2" spring spacers in to give me a 4" lift all round but cannot seem to find a definite answer of what I will need as well to make this happen...? ie will I need to be changing radius arms, trailing arms prop shafts etc? I seem to be able to find very little info on this for the disco 2 and was just wondering what is 100% necessary to do and secondly the suppliers for these parts?

Thank you all in advance!
Sam.

You'll probably need to fit caster corrected arms at the front to avoid bump steer - you might get away with caster corrected bushes but they are expensive and tend to fail.

You're going to have to extend all the brake hoses.

you're going to have to extend the ABS wires from all 4 hubs.

You'll need to add some spacers under the front cross member to avoid it being struck by the front prop.

I'd suggest replacing the rear prop with one from a 200TDI - this does away with the rubber flexijoint (doughnut) onto the flange of the rear diff, but you'll have to swap the flange out for a 4 bolt job. 200TDI prop has UJ's either which means you will have more travel up down.

You might need to replace the front prop for one with more extension, not sure.

Not sure what if any impact there will be on the watt's linkage and or drop links to the ARB's...

Given that you'll be looking at some monster tyres, presumably 33" plus, you'll have to think about having the ratio changed on your tbox.

Thank you very much for your reply! This is proving very helpful to me as I've been struggling to find a definitive answer! Would this be an appropriate replacement...http://www.qtservices.co.uk/parts/land-rover-defender-110/engine-defender-110/prop-shafts-defender-110/land-rover-200-tdi-rear-wide-a_200-tdi-rear-wide-angle-prop-s.html And yes tyres are one of the intentions behind this....

Actually ignore the bit about castor correcting bushes, they are for D1/Defender/RRC only, the trailing arms on the D2 attach to the chassis differently - dunno why I forgot that!

Thank you very much to everyone for all the info here this is proving very helpful! As i'm rather eager on getting it lifted ASAP what major problems am I likely to encounter if I were to lift the items mentioned above standard for the time being...? other than chucking a couple of spacers in under the front cross member and brake lines...?

Thank you, Sam.

You will need to extend brake lines, abs wires all round. The watts linkage and also the ride height indicator will need extending too. If its coils at the rear you're not too bad a shape but airbags are more troublesome so I hear, therefore it's a good time to exchange them. Your dampers should have pin to pin connections as well, I'm not sure if there are like this as standard, the D1 std items are pin at the bottom and eye at the top. A lifted disco puts unreasonable pressure and stress on the top eye mount and this is a usual failure point.

A 4" lift will make your castor go out by 6 degrees. Bushes alone won't work you will have to have castor arms or import plates from rovertym in aus or similar. Once corrected though you will find that increased vibration may occur, however each vehicle is different.

The rear will require cranked trailing arms and I believe the same issue as the disco 1 will come and visit you in the form of the prop slider being too short. Spacers or a longer prop may be required.

Having performed a similar height lft on a D1, I would suggest that you gather all the parts prior to the lift. Doing it piecemeal like I have is not the best way as you are always putting stress on one component or another during the fitting stage which can last months. I am suffering from worn bushes at the rear as until recently I have not fitted cranked trailing arms. These worn bushes made the steering very exciting which in turn is dangerous.

All up new dampers, springs, arms and brackets plus brake lines etc will run to between £800-£1200 pounds all in. You can get cheap kits which may work for you or like me and many others, shop around and get the best equipment at reasonable prices. After all January is coming up soon.....

Thank you very much for your reply! very useful must be said. Im currently running +2 inch shocks n springs with longer brake lines and have been investigating the abs wire lengths... (see pictures below) and I think that they look long enough (however i may be wrong...). I just seem to be struggling the find the cranked arms suitable for a disco 2...

Plus 5 Dampers all round would be a minimum going forward. This length is more than often the limiting factor when considering articulation.

If you want to see how much difference your suspension mods make, I would suggest calculating your RTI score. The Ramp Travel Index will give you a figure that will change as you alter your setup. If the score increases then you're going the right way, if it doesn't then you are making mistakes. Look it up or PM me and I will give you the simple run down.

Extreme 4x4 do castor correction arms that run at about £160 each.

Les Richmond Automotive in Australia produces a lot of stuff for the Discovery 2 and it along different lines to what you may find here. He produces castor correction plates, something Im working on myself. Don't discount the postage either as it is not all bad. I bring stuff over on there on occasion.

Also when looking at your wheel and tyre choice, be mindful of your arch limits with the wheel in the upward plane. I'm not sure but I think the D2 have a smaller arch width.

Wow! been looking over this site now for a while and am very impressed! you are an absolute wealth of information and are really helping me get further with where I want to be at with my disco! I cannot thank you enough! I shall have a look at this RTI score in a moment I think.

Yes I have been thinking of this as ideally I'm thinking I would like to run 315/75/16's on her....
