discovery 1 and 2 diffs

Gday all
over the past dew days noticed a slight knocking noise in the drive train front d2 td5 ..I have drained the oil out of the front diff oil is metallic colour and there was a roler bearing also on the magnet with lots of swarf

does any one know if the discovery 1 runs the same front diff centre as the d2
the reason I ask is my neighbour is parting out a d1

yes they do. its the same diff, front and rear, for the defender, D1, D2 and RRC all from 93 onwards.

I removed my front d2 diff centre today the pin that runs through the centre of the bevel gears is starting to walk out

my neighbour can says I can take the front diff centre ..I have noticed on his d1 he has a different CV joint set up so hoping he has the same number of splines

hmm... they do come in 10 spline or 24 spline. 24 is most common i believe. i only know because i've looked into it before and the vast majority for sale were 24 spline. would be unlucky if yours is different :rolleyes:

I removed one of the D1 spline drive shafts its a 24 spline ..and I also tried his spline on my removed diff ..just to be safe I also counted all the teeth gears

the d1 I removed the diff from was originally mine but the engine slipped its timing and bent the engine
I had put new oil in drive train aproxx 8 months before engine letting go ..I was going to repair it but never had the money nor time ..... my neighbour bought the vehicle from me as he had plans putting in another engine ...seems like he has lost interest and now scrapping .when I drained the oil from the diff it still looked clean so this a good sign as I have somewhat history on his D1

any ways job is near complete ..I iam allowing time for the silicon to dry then add oil then tests drive

ps when I was removing the diff from the D1 there is a big rubber balance of somewhat bolted to the bottom of the diff ..iam guessing this is to take any harmonic vibrations ...my 2002 td5 d2 never had one but has now it does sit very close to the steering arm compared to the d1 . if it interferes I can easily remove the weight balance
