Discovery 1 1995 V8 bonnet hood popping out…!

Hello guys,

Discovery 1 bonnet hood is popping out time to time. Once it is closed it is fine but suddenly it pops out, it doesn’t happen all the time but it is unpredictable. I have check the locked and sprayed WD40 nothing unusual is observed. Is this common in D1’s ? Or any one had this problem and managed to fix it ?

If the bonnet lock is free then the cable is probably rusty/sticking and not returning completely and leaving lock only just engaging. Release from lock and make sure it's free to move easily.

When it’s locked it doesn’t come out even if it’s a bumpy ride / off-road it doesn’t comes out. As I said it is unpredictable never know when it will decide to pop out

I can sprayed WD40 to the lock and ensured all moving parts are intact. What exactly I should be checking in the lock?

Lube the whole cable.

The bonnet pin its adjustable to take up any wear. so you could try extending the pin so it goes slighter deeper into the catch on the slam panel. So slacken the bonnet pin locknut then unscrew the pin anti-clockwise just half or even a full single turn should be sufficient, then do up lock nut and job done

For the bonnet catch engine oil or grease is the permanent solution not WD40.

Tried my best to unscrew the pin hell it’s not moving at all… the spring is in between still I manage to put a plier in and tried to turn but no luck. Any other trick ?

If the pin has never been touched then I expect it’s seized.
No other tricks but if its like my disco then three bolts holding it and so the whole item can be re moved and what ever is behind can be sprayed with your WD40 and then able to turn it with your screwdriver in the slot on end of the pin.
Tip: make sure u keep the length of the pin the same as it was before removing and fit back onto the bonnet and then readjust.

Ive never taken much notice of my discos bonnet lock and the taking a photo today I noticed there is no sign of locknut, so I must be thinking of another vehicle when I adjusted the pin.

Yep, as we have been saying.
If the cable is sticky you will think that it has gone back to where it should once the bonnet is shut.
But it hain't, so it's only just holding it. Take the open/shut mech off and lube the cable.
Hold it vertically and trickle 3 in 1 or summat into the top end then work the cable back and forth in its outer, keep doing this, it takes a while as the lube won't move along the cable very easily, it takes moving the inner cable to shift the lube.
I had a problem on the Bowden cable on my three wheeled brushcutter/mulcher's height locking device, very like a bonnet release.
Faffed around for ages at the business end trying to keep it working properly.
Once I realised it was the cable and did the above, the problem went away.
You may still be able to get cable oilers. I have never seen one but I know they used to exist. Prolly not worth it for just the odd job.
