Joking aside.
I,ve got both.
D1 for offroad days. ( as its to rotten to get an MOT ! )
D2 for comfort. ( and bigger repair bills ! ).

i dont want a d2. seen way too much elecronic stuff on other peoples.

Electronic stuff......what sort if electroncs you talking about. My 300's got hardly any. Elecy windows and thats about all.
On the whole think its down to how many £££££££s you have to spend and how many goodies you want to add
.

I got a late 1994 D1 300 ES manual, its got no engine ECU to go wrong, the windows work and thats about all i worry about I think its about the right balance of electronics to mechanics, later models go too far towards electronics and history shows that the more modern an engine gets the more unreliable it gets, although it also gets more fuel efiicient - look at the 2.25 petrol lump, it will run forever with minimal maintenance but then look at the newer engines and read all the overheating, warped head, melted piston, duff injector, oil in the ECU stuff.
Its not just Landrovers either.

I would say it depends on: A how much comfort you want; B. What use you intend to put this vehicle to & C. What is your budget?
Incidently, when new to a forum and asking for help it would be more polite to "ask for your advice"- rather than "that's where you lot come in"

If you're looking a razing it and fitting dislocation stuff, sounds like you're already leaning towards a D1. More offroad bits for them, and cos of lack of leccy bits easier to work on.
On the flipside, the D2 is smoother on road due to, when they're working, the ACE and the rear air suspension brooks much less than the coil sprung D1 etc.
Before the flaming starts, I'm not advocating one over the other. I haven't driven a D1, only been passenger, but the D2 left me far less queasy in the back! It all depends on what application you want to put it to.

200 series - very simple, barely no electronics, just electrics. Gets the job done, impossible to not repair. Not the comfiest/well refined but certainly won't stop without a fight.
300 - the onset of electronics. You got window ECU, immobilisers, lambda sensors etc etc. Albeit a much better car, and more pleasant car to drive on and off road but you may find you get it wet and something won't work without rhyme or reason. Still easy to repair and bits are cheap though.
D2 - probs alround best disco ever. ALL ROUND. it's great on and off road, much more sensible road manners and very good offroad out of the box with traction control. But, it has it's failings, and these are usually electronic. A D2 may leave you scratching your head or comforting your wallet for quite some time. Worth mentioning that it won't be rotten (generally) and it probably won't leak water in when wading.
Overall:
Older the better for predominantly off road, a 200 can be soaked day in day out and all it will need is a starter and alternator eventually.
Conversely, a D2 can hammer motorways all year round and be easy to drive, but it might mysteriously break down one day and cost you a few hundred.
A 300 is in the middle so can do a bit of both admirably.
Don't expect one to do the other ones job, and you've found the right car.

Ive just walked away from buying a TD5 (deposit paid as well!) I have the money and it would be lovely driving around in a shiny 03 reg, but Ive had my beloved 300TDI for many, many years and its never let me down (apart from rusting away for this years MOT) I feel I owe the old girl and shes going back on the road!
um ok i wasnt aware that my wording was impolite at all as im a member of another forum and i thought that it would have the same sort of atmospher (a fun relaxed one) so i do appologise for trying to ask question in a light hearted way.
on the other note about the search feature i agree i should of used it and im sorry that i forgot.
equally you could of pm'ed me about my "impolite" asking rather than trying to embaress a new member, this would of made me feel a little bit more welcome.

tons of relays.
