A couple of months ago I joined the ranks of Disco owners with a 1999 TD5 Disco 2.
Could any one advise me what sort of time it should take for the temp gauge to get to normal position.
Mine takes about 10 minutes or about 5 miles of town driving.
I was wondering if the thermostat is stuck in the open posision .

Your thermostat isn't stuck open.

It has 2 valves on it. the first one acts on coolant temp like a traditional thermostat. The second works on rpm. The pressure caused by suction from the water pump at 1500rpm upwards opens a bypas system. This keeps your heater warmer when on tickover and your engine cooler under load.

Mine's the same (and always has been) - on colder mornings it's around 4 miles of normal driving. Longer under easy load (lots of downhills), and warms up faster on tougher loading...
