Yeeees this question again - yes I know it's possible and many people do it. As well as my off road ventures I do a fair amount of on road driving. The question for me is I have slightly larger than standard tyres (31 - yes I know not massive but we're on standard diffs here) - would the disco transfer box even this out as it currently wont do more than 60 without screaming at me (tops out at 70) roof rack probably doesn't help - boxy bastid! Also, is the low range ratio the same as the Defender as I don't want to loose off road ability. Other questions include any changes to acceleration - better or worse? Not to bothered about fuel economy, but guess it would be better? What's the best transfer box from the discoveries to get and are they as tough as the fender ones on output etc?

Thanks again :D

low gear ratio is the same on all lt230s only high gear differs, there the same as def box so equally as strong ,late 300 tdi is the best of all lt230s ,later go to fine teeth on q types which often shear off ,disco box is a good upgrade for most defenders but depends on use ,off the mark 1.4 is obviously slightly better than 1.2 disco box ,

My 300tdi 110 had a discovery transfer box in it. it was much happier than the defender transfer box at 70-80mph but wasn't too keen to pull away with a heavy trailer or van on the back. to counter this I used to pull away in low range when towing and then move up to high range on the move.

One day I will get around to sticking a disco transfer box in my td5 110 but as the one in it was new 2 months before I bought it (I got full service history with it) I am reluctant to do it yet.

Right, I don't do any towing, let alone heavy towing. The only towing I do is recovery but then again that would be in low range so irrelevant. JM I am confused by what you say a bit contradictory? - 'late 300 tdi is the best of all lt230s ,later go to fine teeth on q types which often shear off'
Are you also telling me that it will make me slower off the mark?

If you're interested .. Fancy a swap?

what mileage Defender? and condition of transfer box? I want a 1.4 Defender Transfer on my Disco, which has done 130k .. if yours has the same or close to, and is in as good condition, then would you consider meeting one weekend and simply swapping? Do both at once?

Only reason I want one is 'cos I have larger tyres and want lower gearing because I _do_ tow my caravan regularly .. opposite to you! A 1.4 box would also bring my speedo back to working somewhere close again .. ;)

So the 1.4 is better for larger tyres then >.< I see, I had better stay with it then?! Will be upgrading to 35's in the distant future lol. I know my engine is disco and has 66k but haven't got the foggiest what my transfer box has might even be the 300k or so the rest of it has! For all I know it might even be a disco one :D Any way to find out? guessing number, where do you find it on a TB? Thanks. Don't really want to loose my acceleration, if I have boost I can annoy new audi drivers >;)
Anyone here done the Disco to fender change and care to share their experience also?

There are a variety of speedo drives in various colours to indicate ratio, I posted this couple of years back for someone else

Yeah, ICBA to do that, just thought a complete swap of T-box would be ideal for us both.
