I'm currently borrowing a 97/98 diesel auto disco.

The engine is over-reving with the car going very slowly for the rev of the engines! I think the torque convertor has gone. The car will get upto speed but it doesnt like hills at all! Owner thought it may be to do with the kickdown. Before I tell him he needs a new torque convertor is there anything quick and easy I can do to confirm it?

Also, the engine check light and SRS light is on. They came on at the same time as the car started to "loose speed" and overrev. I think this is because the ECU is seeing low speed for the engine revs and throwing up the error?

I tried to connect an ODB II but it wont connect. I took it to a mate who has a fancy bit of kit but this did not have the "language" of Land Rover in it!! Is there a cheap diagnostic thats garenteed to talk with the 97/98 Disco?

I am in kenya so dont suggest going to any local dealer - rubbish!!! The owner already went through that trouble.

Other than the recognised LR tolols and their copies I very much doubt you will find anything other than Bosch KTS to talk to it.If the fluid level is good then drop the sump to see whats lying in the bottom.
The other thought is that the engine, esp with the CEL on is simply not making enough power to drive the torque converter.

it still has a kick down cable check that it is correctly adjusted and proberly look at the afm as faulty or the throttle postion switch as the 2 most coman you can run with the afm disconnected and see if it pulls any better

Lerk - The engine is the 300 TDi so I'm told. I will check the fluid now!

eightinavee - Thanks for the diog pointers. You said "engine, esp with the CEL on". What the heck is esp and CEL? Sorry to be such a novice. I guess what you eman is that the engine isn't producing enough torque, whilst the engine is running OK perhaps the fuel pumps aren't giving enough fuel to the injectors. Fuel pump relay issue?

vougese39 - OK, will check the cable, any tips for adjustment? Also, "afm"? whats that? I assume the "auto fuel module?".

Thanks all, good tips.

Esp - especially,CEL - check engine lamp,AFM - Air flow meter.
To have any hope of diagnosing the engine you really need to get it on Testbook - or something very similar.Without that you are really stabbing in the dark.I'd get the engine sorted first, then worry about the autobox.

I was under the assumtion that the 300 used the ZF autobox which is mechanically not electronically controlled, so how would testbook tell you anythiing about the gearbox?

As mentioned above, check the setup of the kick down cable and oil level correct...

As for the check engine light - maybe it could be something to do with the TPS (throttle position sensor) if this is playing up it may be sending conflicting information to the ecu, although i'm not sure what else the ecu reads in that could conflict with a faulty TPS input.
