Hi

Am new to this !!!!!!!

Our Discovery 2 TD5 2002 Air Sus is playing up. we have only recently fitted two new dunlop air bags and now the dam air compresor is playing up one min it works then does'nt.our local Independant land rover garage said its on the way out only a mater of time before it goes pop !!!

Do we pay out approx £300 quid plus fitting and replace it or replace it with a spring kit we also tow weekly an Ifor trailer loaded with two horse's

1) Which spring kit ?
2) Do we need Shocks or just the spring kit.
3) Standard or a 20 / 30 mm lift

Please help

if you like the air keep it, can get 2nd hand compressors from £100, i could get one off a mates whos changed to coil springs, or if you dont want air swop to springs, you would have to inform insurance company not that expensive to put it on springs. and you should do the introduce yourself section ;)

You can pick up a new pump for £280 ish. Fit yourselves.
Or try a used pump with warranty.

I would stick to the air suspension if a lot of towing but that's just my choice

Hi RSV, if I were you I would keep the SLS as it's better for the horses in the trailer in my opinion.

You don't say exactly what is the problem, so here are just a few thoughts

The SLS system has 3 main components which need to be kept in good condition:

1. The air springs - need replacing every 3-5yrs irrespective of condition;

2. The ride height sensors. These are out in the breeze so catch all the road muck going and tend to get iced-up during winter and give duff info to the SLS ecu. These sensors should be changed every 3-5 yrs, irrespective of condition.

Check the sensors, watch and clean the swivel points and electrical contacts and then give them a thorough spray with WD-40 to keep water off them.

3. The compressor and valve set. These can suffer if the air filter behind the nearside rear pillar tail light gets soaked with water and then freezes. This has two effects,1. starves air for the compressor & 2 when wet allows water to enter the compressor and the results aren't good.

NB The compressor should NOT be operating all the time. It should only cut in when the ride height sensors tell it to make an adjustment or when you press the ORM (Off-Road Mode) but to raise the rear end.

If I were you I would be testing the operation of the compressor by pressing the ORM button and timing how long it takes to raise the 2" it's supposed to.

Good lunch

Dave

Whilst I accept the air suspension may be better, we tow an ifor williams trailer with one or two horses without any problems on our standard coils.

The more I read about issues with leaking sunroofs, air con, air suspension, the happier I am with our XS which has none of those!

One point I have not seen made on this thread is that I think if you have 7 seats you need to keep the air suspension, or your insurance will be invalid.

Good luck whatever you end up doing................................

Most insurance company's are okay with it aslong as you inform them of it :)

Hi

Thanks for all the replies

I havent got any lights on the dash etc but the suspension wouldnt work no noise from the compressor the suspension wouldnt raise up etc but has started to work again. We replaced the Air bags on the rear approx 4 months ago.

We have owned the Disco about a year now and plan to keep it for another couple of years hence thought it might be best to strip out the air system to avoid any further issues.

Cheers Neil

Hi Neil, when you tried to pump up the suspension did you have all doors closed? It won't work if any are open.

Have you checked the ride height sensors to see if they are caked with mud/snow/crap or are broken?
