Hi

Am looking to buy either a post '96' disco 300tdi or a post '96' defender 300tdi.

What will give me more value in terms of servicing costs, fuel economy, spare parts and reliability.

Cheers

Proabaly the 90, its like a giant mechano set.

I have a 90 and a 300tdi Disco, I know which one I would rather work on any day... the 90.

If you have a haynes manual I would reckon you could sort out most of your servicing needs, on the whole the 90 parts will be cheaper, although of course the engine parts are the same.

Thanks for that.
Having looked around the defenders seem to fetch more money than a disco of equivelent milage and age. Is that normal?

Yea, in the end the Defender will go on for longer, its just the nature of the vehicle, people who have Defenders will spend more time on them, as the majority of them are owned by people who need/want it. Buisnessmen and school run mums don't tend to have a 90, and they also don't tend to change oil and keep the chassis in good condition, 90 owners will...

Are you new to Land Rovers? If so, I would recommend you take a Defender for a drive before you decide on anything. A Disco is pretty much lika yer average car - but it sits higher than a "normal" car. The Defender can be quite a shock to some: crappy wipers, pathetic heater, hard seats, drafty doors, rattly everything, turning circle of a Zeppelin etc. etc. You either love 'em or hate 'em. :)

Have driven both and either will suit my needs, as i have just moved into a house up a steep track in the Alps France. The vehicle will be used mostly for short journeys i.e up to 30 mins at time.

I bought a 1989 Defender 90 TD last winter for £500 but when i took it to a land rover mechanic he refused to work on it saying i was throwing good money after bad!

Gareths got it about right, apart from the turning circle. I can't agree with that at all. A 90 has a smaller turning circle than the average family car and a Disco. But basicly they are a bag of ****e, and absolutely 'kin brilliant. And the crappy wipers there not crappy at all, there worse than crappy. Oh eye the seats aren't hard at all, it's the bit underneath the seat thats hard.

I can't agree more with your mechanic either, a £500 90 isn't worth spending money on unless it's a hobby and you are devoted to it.
