Disco nearly killed me

So I nearly died today. Was out on a Land Rover Experience convoy day in my car and while descending a very steep hill, the car slipped out of low range which nearly caused me to plunge down the hill. There was a drop at the end and I dread to think what would happen if I didn't get the car back under control.

Any idea what would cause it to slip out of gear while in low 1st? Only seems to happen on low 1st while descending steep slopes.

not fully engaged, when you engaged it did you put in reverse, before going forward ?

a very similar thing hapend to my mate in his s111 a few years back at cawm quarry ( rochdale ) he was new to off roading at the time so went down this steep hill with him a couple of times before he decided to have ago him self, anyway i went down first in mine then he followed me after i got out of the way.

so he starts to go down the hill then all of a sudden he flies down and luckerly for him there was a recently dropped pile of earth tipped at the but to one side of the hill and his s111 ended up embeded in it, my mate dives out screeming and rolling about the floor then once he carmed down he pulled his tee shirt up and he had the imprint of the steering wheel on his belly and very soor ribs, there was also a corncrete gate post in the pile of earth that his bumper had hit and it had damaged his bumper.

it turned out his o/d lever had some how jumped out of gear causing him to crash into the pile of earth, lookerly for him the pile of earth was there as on the other side of it there was two deep earth mover tracks there.

You always need to when shifting into low range allows it to engage full be momentary taking the torque (windup)out of the transfer/transmission. and if a manual transfer case pull the lever to the position you chose as it will help to engage it.
I have a electric shift on mine so when I turn the switch I always go to reverse if i'm stopped. If on the go and switch to 4x4 high lock i'll pop the tranny into neutral,then give a little throttle and then back into drive even at 70mph works ever time

rich, when you are changing from high to low or vice versa try rolling at under 5mph and you may find the lever travels a little further. Used to happen with my auto as i dont think it had been used before i owned it.

sounds like you didnt engage low properly, did you have diff lock on?

either linkage needs adjusting to ensure it is fully in low ,theres a 6mm allen screw on drivers sied rear of box at top can be adjusted in till lever jams then out till clears just,more seriously worn bearings or excessive free play on diff carrier

well i can honestly say ive never heard of that one and have personally never done it or know anyone else who puts into reverse before selecting low range

with some of the jap cars that had locking front hubs i remember you were supposed to reverse after unlocking the hubs and putting them back in 2wd but never heard of that with a landy unless you have had diff lock on and caused transmission wind up.
