Anyone know why all the series 1 Discoveries I come across(3 of them so far) keep melting the sockets on the back of the headlight bulbs.
Its easy enough to fix but a bit annoying. I usually replace them with sockets from the local motor factor but they go as well.

earthing out? to stronger current bulb? or damp in the electrics? are what i can think of off the top of my head?

i had a 1989 subaru legacy with stronger bulbs that had the same problem changed them for a new set of origonals and was fine (all appart from i could not see the road as well at night.

cheers

And while you're at it, can anyone tell me why the disco 1 headlights are totally crap? Even full beam leaves a lot to be desired.
Has anyone checked the voltage to the lights?
I used to own a VW T4, and their lights were crap too. It was due to VW using such a long wire run to them, that they get a 2volt loss. The fix was to rewire with a separate relay, like you would with fog/ spot lights.

the headlights are ****e, specially if your putting guards or bullbars or winch bumpers infront of em. i think the big bumper probs dont help

bite the bullet, go to halfrauds and get some super brilliance bulbs, bogof at the moment, they do loads of different ones now, we got some when we got the 2nd disco, and they made a fair bit of difference. think they've got even stronger ones now, and blue-y ones like new car bi-xenon ones

I've just got the standard bulbs fitted so it's not a problem with high current drain and the wiring's OK apart from the plugs.
I usually find the lights are OK when they're working properly. I'll give the brighter bulbs a try though.
By the way, Mr.V, it looks like you've got an early Mk1 Disco. Didn't they have smaller headlights? I think its fairly easy to fit the larger Mk1 lights. Don't know about the Series 2 lights though.
