My wife is considering buying a (used) Discovery, possibly a Td3, and it falls to YT to do the "checking over". I've not bought a Landrover before, so wondered if anyone could give some advice on what to look out for/not touch with a bargepole etc.

I'm guessing we're looking at something maybe 10 years old, 100K miles or so, but naturally don't want to make an expensive mistake... Of course one expects aging cars to incur bills, but I don't fancy those of the expensive variety! It will be a diesel and auto.

Are there any models/years to avoid?
What about imports?
Any items/features that need careful inspection?

I can find my way around cars in general -- like checking engine oil state for symptoms of head gasket problems, general oil leaks etc. but know little about warning signs to look for in a Disco, especially diesels and autos.

Any advice much appreciated.

The first thing to look out for is anyone trying to sell you a TD3. As far as I'm concerned a 3 cylinder landy will be a bit low on power.

Do you mean a TD5?

Don't really know what I mean! Maybe I meant a 300 tdi -- I remember seeing a '3' in there somewhere... My criteria are:

* something I can afford, and
* the more mechanical and less electronic the better

Does that narrow the field a bit?

TD5 is the Disco 2 version of the Disco 1 300TDi... Like the follow on, about 10 years old will be the TD5.... TD5 is a lot more electrical that the 300TDi

Well, give us your budget and then we'll have more idea of what you're looking at.
